AppleTV's and streaming videos from an iPad

We've got iPad's and AppleTV's on our network and for the most part they work pretty well and - to my surprise - are actually being used more than I initially expected. However, we've got one user who's tried streaming a video (that she's recorded on her iPad) to the AppleTV so the whole class can watch it. The video plays fine on the iPad but when AirPlay is activated, the AppleTV just spins the grey-ish Loading logo over and over and over and over and...

 

I haven't left it running for absolutely ages to see if it eventually loads, but had it going for 2-3 minutes when I tested. Staff member says they've left it at least 5 to no avail.

 

Unfortunately with barely anyone in this week there's not much scope for me to test further. Anybody had similar issues like this with apple kit they've installed and found a solution?

We found that, AirPlay wouldn't work at all and it just showed a blank screen. Had to turn off AirPlay on AppleTV and re-turn it on. Might help you!

We tend to have this issue here too. I called apple and it seems like so far no solution. Since updating the apple TV to the latest update it works better, but still get every so often the same issue again !

 

It seems like it's related to network issues. You need to make sure the Bonjour service is authorise to run on your wireless network. It still doesn't explain why it sometimes works and why sometimes it doesn't.

Have you got HDMI to VGA converters somewhere in the signal from AppleTV to projector? If HDCP gets broken then you might get symptoms like this.

We don't, no.

 

Data is streamed from the iPad to the Wifi access point in the room, presumably travels around the wired network for a bit, before arriving back at the very same access point and wirelessly streamed to the AppleTV sat no more than 10 inches away. The AppleTV is connected to the projector via HDMI.

We had the same issue and it doesn't appear to be anything to do with wireless configuration issue (Meru or otherwise).

Scenario 1.

Apple tv connected via Ethernet

ipad connected to wifi (a box standard dlink ap)

No proxy settings on apple TV.

Video streams fine via Airplay

But no access to Apple store (as expected since no proxy)

 

Scenario 2.

ipad connected to wifi (a box standard dlink ap)

proxy settings on apple TV via apple configurator

Video streams fails via Airplay (stuck on loading screen)

Access to Apple store (as expected due to proxy)

 

No idea why video fails to stream with proxy details on Apple TV. will try and get in touch with apple and see if they can shed some light.

Ah, @CompSezNo, that is at least something I can try. If I find the member of staff and switch off the proxy and test, it'll at least confirm if we have the same issue or not. Thanks!

The latest Apple Tv's and iPads 4th Gen or higher don't have to be on the same wifi network, they can talk to each other via peer to peer, details below...

We actually didn't want that. We liked the fact that the AppleTV's we have and the iPad streaming to them need to be on the same WiFi network, as it's a nice security measure to stop little Bobby putting up something rude

All the same security is in place whether you use per to peer or not???

Almost, but not quite. The WiFi requirement means that fast-fingered little Bobby can't put the PIN in before the teacher and put a rudies up for all to see. And let's face it, iPhone's aren't exactly unpopular. Plenty of opportunities.

 

Yes, that's a squishy issue, not a technical one, but it still stops our phone ringing
