Avoid Audacity for anything like 'mixing,' though if you just want quick chopping and re-organising and a few effects I quite like the workflow.

 

Other than that, nothing free tickles my pickle. Cubase for me.

It's a browser-based music workstation package with full collaboration. It has loops and instruments as presets, and allows file imports of your own tracks/loops/samples as well as real-time recording using your machine's hardware.

It's quite extraordinary and well worth a look.

Looks good, do note that it requires Chrome to work (not a problem for most schools, but we don't use it for instance).
