Yep.

Next - illegal to smoke while pregnant.

Agreed, and none of this paying them in food vouchers to bribe them to quit nonsense!! What a joke that is! Clowns should be in the big top, not right at the top...

I just don't get WHY it's been legal for so long. You can't drink or eat whilst driving (which I do understand) but it's still legal to drive along with a burning hot fag in your mouth? If I dropped a sandwich on my crotch whilst driving I'd get mayo on it. If I dropped a can of Relentless on my crotch whilst driving I'd get a wet crotch. If I dropped a lit cigarette on my crotch the consequences would be a very distracting injury, rather than the inconvenience of the former two.

Not sure I've agreed with people being fined for sipping water at traffic lights for instance, but the law is the law and you might conceivably miss a bike/cyclist at the time you're distracted. I guess.

Anyways, never understood this. Ban it outright whilst driving says I.

It is legal to eat and drink while driving though the highway code does state you should avoid those types of distractions and you do run the risk of being done for driving without due care and attention. For example don't try to eat a roast dinner. A kit kat will suffice :)

Thanks! Must have been unlucky days or grumpy coppers for the people I've heard of getting done. And by 'heard' I mean 'heard from coppers themselves.'

It's sad but unfortunately yes, a lot of people are. Smoking is believed to be as addictive as heroin.

You know what? I've read this before now too. I think whoever conjured that up might have been over-egging it a bit to be honest. I've quit smoking and I don't recall spending a week with the lights off screaming and pooping myself.

Addiction and withdrawal are separate things.

Its generally believed that nicotine is more addictive than heroin but heroin has much nastier withdrawal symptoms. If you need citations you can Google it, there's plenty of research on it.

My dad used to smoke in the car when I was little, he used to think that all smoke was going out the window... I suppose it was perceived slightly different back then, though hasn't done me any harm?

I've only really skimmed the thread but this statement stood out, so I'll throw this spanner in the works: smoking damages cells in your lungs, that's a fact - second hand smoke has the same effect. Now it only takes one damaged cell to allow cancer to grow in your lungs.. if you're in perfect condition after being raised inhaling secondhand smoke (you mentioned you smoke so this isn't true, but for the sake of argument let's pretend you don't smoke), then you are very lucky in my opinion - not everyone is as lucky.

They had that TV ad (ok designed to shock but...) where the dads in the Volvo Estate having a fag with the window open but the smoke is all over the inside of the car where his baby is sat in a car seat in the back.

Yes yes I'd imagine very true. Though as you say only 'generally believed' as there's nothing conclusive. Well, from my teabreak I just spent googling it anyways.

Was more an attempt on my part to have a dig at the sensationalist articles on it out there, which omit mention of physical withdrawal in favour of, well, the sensationalism.

The people who smoke in cars with their children in the back seats will continue to do so regardless of a new law. There are still people who drive their kids around without car seats. I have lost count of the number of times I have seen kids standing on the back seats whilst the parent is strapped in their own seat happily driving. Use of phones is banned in cars but people still do it.

Ignorant & selfish people will continue to do as they please.

If it stops one person from smoking in their car with kids in it, then its worth it.

New laws always stop more than 1 person, it will stop a lot and it will also help some quit. I know several people who have quit smoking as a result of the law not just because of their health warnings.

I was a smoker.

I've just read through this whole thread , can we please replace smoking with consuming nicotine as some people on here seem to think that its the smoking that's addictive but vaping's not. it is otherwise people would be able to quit vaping easy, its still a dependency/addiction to nicotine

just should have added im an ex smoker I quit cold turkey and I know that's not for everyone, but I had two very good reasons to do so The birth of my twin daughters. If they hadn't been born id probably still be smoking now as to be honest I knew it was bad for me unhealthy but honestly I enjoyed it.

to everyone giving up well done its not easy no matter how you do it and to those who have never smoked well done your way more sensible than I was.

Other half struggled to stop smoking, not because of the nicotine. She is now smoking vapour electronic ones that have fruit.

She just needs something to occupy her fingers (no joke).

This is pretty common, a number of smokers I know quit through vapes with nicotine free liquid.

Yea but ...

I used nicotine tablets to help me give up smoking. It was still tough but they did help me. I didn't give up the tablets as such - one day I realised I hadn't had one for a couple of days and I just threw the remaining ones away. So IMO there is a lot of habit and 'programming' to the smoking addiction. It's not just nicotine.

It should also be mentioned that nicotine on it's own causes little to non health problems and causes no problems to people around you, it's the way smokers consume nicotine that's the problem.

Just a point of interest; there is probably enough nicotine in a packet of rolling tobacco to kill you. In pure form, it is one of the most poisonous substances around.

Part of the problem with cigarettes is the thousands of toxic compounds that are produced as a result of the combustion.

A lethal dose of Nicotine to a human can range from a minimum of 500mg. Your average cigarette contains 0.8mg of Nicotine.

Way before you start to see any damage done by Nicotine alone you will experience awful headaches, abdominal pain, vomiting and so forth it would be extremely hard to OD on Nicotine by smoking tobacco, the only way it can be done is if you eat the plant in large quantities or handle Nicotine a lot as Nicotine can be absorbed in the skin.

It should also be noted that there's enough caffeine in a 500g instant coffee container that if taken purely on its own would kill you.

Don't forget that alcohol is also very poisonous as well but no one seems to have a problem with this as it's socially acceptable.

Ban smoking in the house!

Ban buses! those things make me cough when driving behind one! Find an Eco friendly way of running them.

Ban Alcohol! Throw this in as it will upset a few souls...

Ban it all! Ban it all ha ha ha ha...

Why not try and educate people first and then introduce the ban after a period of time..

Pretty sure scientists and health experts have spent 30+ years educating people... Weirdly, the tobacco lobby has spent that entire time fighting the idea that passive smoking is bad for people.

Do you disagree with the science over passive smoking and the damage it does to children? There's quite a lot of evidence now...

Or is it the removal of the freedom to poison children in cars that is making you annoyed?

Or are we back to the nonsensical "its unenforceable" argument.

I still don't know why anyone took up smoking who is under 50 it been offfical bad since 1957!

As long as it's around you will always get new people who will start smoking when young, it's another drug. We know herorin, ecstasy, cannabis is bad but people still consume them!!

To be honest I think they should make all toxic drugs illegal. I can't see them ever making the likes of Nicotine or Alcohol illegal because the Government earns too much money from it all.
