Hi All!

 

First post in quite a while! Still been around, reading but sadly not posting!

 

I have the opportunity to get 20% off a Vodafone contract. I already have an HTC One M8 on GiffGaff, nearly paid off the HTC. I pay just shy of £40 atm, works out to about £38 a month.

 

I can get a iPhone 6 64GB with Unlim mins/txts and 7GB 4G data with Spotify Unlimited included.

I get 500mins / Unlim txts and Unlimited 3G at the moment.

 

My HTC is great and very customisable but I like the idea of the simpleness of the iPhone. Any one got any thoughts or input? Much Appreciated.

How important is battery life to you? The iPhone 6's battery is really good. Also how much of the other Apple eco system do you have? If you have an iPad or Mac the iPhone with iOS 8 is more integrated with things such as handoff and continuity.

I hate iOS. It is just so restrictive! Want to watch a webm? Nope. No app for that unless you pay. Want to download a file it decides it doesn't like? Nope. No file for you.

 

Android allows you to customise it to what you want.

 

I'd say wait until the M9 is announced to be honest. Its what I'm doing! I may well go for that when it appears, and replace my M7. That contract seems expensive. I got my M7 when it came out for no cost, with unlimited calls/texts and 1.5GB data per month for £21 a month.

^^ This. I can upgrade in March and have the M8... gonna see whether to get the M9 or not. Really does depend on prices!

Are you kidding? Have you seen how much any other network is wanting? EE is something ridiculous like £50.99.

 

I have an iPad but that rarely gets used and I dont have a mac...

 

I keep going from Yes ill do it, to No ill stick with my M8...argggggh decisions!

Been a while since I looked at contracts, but I've never paid more than £35 p/m for any phone. Look atyour actual usage over the past 6 months - what's the maximum number of texts/minutes you use? What's your data use?

 

These 'unlimited' (they almost all have 'fair use' get out clauses) contracts are major overkill for most people, costing people £100+ every year they didn't need to spend.

 

I'll stay out of it, was only trying to help.

You also have to factor in that I would get free sub to Spotify which costs me £9.99 atm too!

I just use Spotify, and that's pretty good.

 

Gawd, Spotify is worst of all - It can't even see the M8's memory card full of music, and it's library has more holes than a good Emmental... :p

I'm an iOS person all the way. I own an iPhone 6 Plus 64GB and recommend it highly! Personally I'm not a fan of Android. The One M8 is definitely a nicely designed phone, but I just don't like the platform. If you must go down the Android route, I'd look no further than the OnePlus One.

Never understood the obsession of always wanting (or thinking that you must need) to have the latest mobile phone (model) and/or claiming you are due another 'free' phone model as your (24 month) contract is ending; especially when you have a high spec mobile already (HTC One M8, which is what I have).

 

Personally, I would just switch to a Three UK 30 day rolling contract; not sure of current costs/perks but I'm paying ~£20pm with 1000's of free minutes and texts, and unlimited data 'with' unlimited tethering (although I think they have introduced some capping for newer customers) and being able to use abroad in many countries with calls/texts/internet being part of your UK allowance...or try GiffGaff etc. and save yourself £20+ a month :thumb:

 

But that's my 2p worth!

I'm on Three, Lumia 620 with almost negligible minutes but a few hundred texts and unlimited data for £15-20 a month. Suits my needs. :)

Yeah sorry, been one of those mornings, I'm in full on defensive mode.

 

I haven't had a new phone in ~3 years, so I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S3. When I first had it, I had a 12 month £30 p/m contract on T-Mobiles unlimited plan - it was around that point I realized how much I was spending unnecessarily. Since then I've stuck with SIM only plans, and when this phone finally dies (it's getting there...) I'll buy a mid-range to get me through another couple of years.

 

Current contract is with 3, SIM only 12 month, 200 minutes (I rarely use more than 60!), truly unlimited data, unlimited texts, 4GB hotspot allowance (this is for tethering, but is only used if you tether through 3's app, doesn't notice if I tether straight from Android! So I get unlimited tethering in reality), roaming use included in monthly allowances (in certain countries), £15 pcm. The main selling point for me was the unlimited data, as I tether my tablet, laptop and Vita to my phone when I'm out and about so can easily exceed 10GB in a month

 

To be fair if you use Spotify it's not a bad deal. I do use Spotify, but since they made mobile use free, I stopped subscribing.

Just looked at the One M8 on Three... Unlimited data, 600 minutes £32 p/m + £50 down payment. :(

Before I rant, to be fair, It's the only (and I do mean my only) complaint with Android and the m8 (which I otherwise love). And from what I can tell the problems mostly stem from Google no liking SD cards...

I've tried most, not all - I'll probably give one or two from that androidpolice article a try - and all have some kind of problem or another. I now tend to switch between Google Play and Amazon Music Player, neither is ideal.

 

Google Play doesn't seem to want to pick up playlist I import, or is very sporadic over when it wants to detect them and which ones it detects. It also seems to have a problem with what it meant by 'random'. To me random means - don't play a song again until all others in the album/playlist have been played - Google disagrees with me. I also can't create playlists using local music, if I go to device mode it decides songs are not available because it can't see the cloud. Google hates SD cards...

 

Amazon fares a little better but I struggle quickly switching between songs/albums/artists and quickly finding what I want among a longer list. But at least it does like playlists and SD cards. There's no shuffle play or auto generated playlists - both of which Google Play has and does better.

 

And they appear to be the best two available :(

In all honesty Google Play would be 100% perfect if I could get it to play nice with the SD card and imported playlists.

 

I always end up having the same problem when I try using Linux as my desktop OS. It all falls apart when I try and find a suitable music app and find I really need iTunes, which is Windows/Mac only.

 

Seriously, if it wasn't for music - or if music isn't the OPs top concern, or Spotify covers what you need - then stick with Android. The m8 is a fantastic phone and I'm sure the m9 will be even better.

 

When it comes to music, despite how much people complain its bloated and buggy (I've never noticed), I don't care what you say - nothing beats iTunes and iOS for large music libraries.

Apart from PowerAmp... MediaMonkey (with added brilliance if you use the desktop version (iTunes without the carp), with syncing)...

 

M8 here with Lollipop... runs great... iPhone does have a niche for those that want simplicity, but flexibility of Android will always win out for me.

 

Personally I'd wait and see what the M9 comes out as has been suggested.

Spotify can handle local music - if you create your playlists on PC, then sync on your wireless. The local files get synced over nicely, along with any and all Spotify music too. On Linux, I used to swear by Amarok. Superb program! XMMS is pretty good too IMO.
