SSD's Happy with them? if so how much and where from?

Looking to upgrade a number of PC's to SSD's.

Any relevant info/experience appreciated

Yes. Very happy with them and will not buy spinning disks any more. Samsung all the way. Have generally avoided sandisk and kingston due to past issues although the latter's newer models are apparently better.

Avoid OCZ.

Samsung 840 Evo's are very good, always used them without any problems. Mine is 2 Years old and still running strong. Kingston V200 are very good also used one of those for a couple of years without problems although I've heard pretty bad things about the V300 so be careful. I also have some Corsairs here (forget the model) but they've been rock solid.

 

Normally just try to avoid Curcial and OCZ and you should be fine.

Half of our PCs now have Samsung 840 Evos in them. Makes a big difference. Hope to get up to 100% in the next 1-2 years.

 

Forgot to say, we spent about £45 on 120GB Evos back in July based on 100 units. Any old box shifter will do to be honest.

We are 100% SSD here now, other than a few Macs which are awaiting me splitting them open. Used a mixture of Sandisk, Crucial and Kingston. Overall results have been outstanding, though our early 64GB fitments are struggling now (regular cleanups necessary).

Be careful with the Mac's. We have bought a Samsung 840 Evo 250GB for one of our MacBook's and for some reason it really doesn't like it. Disk Utility Crashes overtime you try to partition and create a Mac Journaled drive, it seems to happen with every Mac we have as well also Apple have a silly way of mounting their 2.5" HDD with very small screws which are a star shape to unscrew them, this requires a special tool.

 

But if you're like me you shove the SSD in with a bit of blu-tac holding it to the case voila... Though it still didn't work.

Already done an iMac, was okay. I suspect the Macbooks and Unibody Mac Minis will be a swine. We've bought Crucial MX100 for these.

We're mostly a mix of Crucial m4 and Samsung 840 drives, 120/128GB, with a handful of 840 EVOs and Crucial MX100 drives. All been brilliant, wouldn't buy any other brand. Buy them from your favourite reseller of choice, and don't forget the mounting brackets if you're putting them into older machines (which is definitely worthwhile).

 

You can't half notice when you remote onto a machine that's still on a hard drive, I tell you.

We only spec up machines with SSDs now. All our laptops for the last 2 years have either had SSDs as standard, or we've installed SSDs into them ourselves.

 

We've not bought any desktops recently, but when we do, it'll be SSD all the way.

 

We've been using Sandisk SSDs here, with a Kingston in my desktop. We also have some Intels and some Transcend too.

Been using 100% intel SSDs for a couple of years now, they are a little more expensive but I don't see the point in scrimping on storage quality.

 

Still not had a failure in 5 years since we got our first one.

 

Our standard model is the intel 530 120gb which we buy for about £60 quid I think

Most of our SSDs are 120GB or 250GB Samsung 840 EVOs, although we also have a few SSDs made by other companies (Intel 320 Series, SanDisk Extreme / Extreme IIs, etc.).

 

Since there isn't much of a price difference between the 840 EVO (£50.71) and 850 EVO (£54.99) now, I think the latter would be a better choice especially considering the 840 EVO slowness bug might not be completely fixed.

 

SSDs to avoid: anything with a Phison controller, Crucial SSDs, Kingston V300, old OCZ SSDs.

 

We've bought Crucial MX100 for these.

Hopefully your MX100s will be reliable...

Still not had a failure in 5 years since we got our first one.

The only SSD we have had fail is a 64GB Crucial M4. Everything else has been rock solid.

400 PC's and laptops now with SSD's, mostly Crucial or Kingston 120GB's, another 250 to upgrade as we have decided to go 100% SSD by 12 months time. Like others, no plans to ever buy old HDD's again as the performance gain is impressive (even teachers have noticed the difference and we've never told them we changed the disks....)

Same as most, all new machines as of about 18 months ago have SSDs. We bought a load of Sandisk 64GB drives initially which we used to upgrade a suite of ageing Optiplex units and to stick in some staff laptops and admin machines, and that's been a success. I did grab a few Kingston V300s as well to upgrade some more staff laptops last year as well and we haven't had any issues as of yet.

Oh man, they've just arrived. I'm having a mare with this current order. On that feedback, I think I'll send them back - I have had issues with failed 64GB Crucial M4s which got sorted after some wrangling, and they did concede in the end. Can't be doing with that again.

I have 100s of M4s in place, had three fail so not disappointed with the general reliability - so far!

£23 each, going from MX100 to 850 EVO. That adds up pretty fast.

Yup! SATA is SATA is SATA when it comes to cables. The jumps in generation are only relevant for the motherboard and storage device.

Kingston 120gb V300s mainly now, £36 per drive, Had over 100 of them in play for over a year now with no issues. Plan to get another 100 this year most likely.

We do not have any at work due to funding being terrible, however i have a Kingston SSDNow V300 at home in an old-ish mid range laptop and I cannot stand HDDs now.

Only paid 50 for it about 3 months ago.
