If it is compatible and the switch doesn't require it to be coded then yes it will work.

However, does anyone recommend using these compatibles in a switch?

Yes you can.

However, we buy the second hand CISCO ones off eBay for like £10 each.

Had a couple of duds, but most work fine - much cheaper than the £150 each or whatever they are new from CISCO. :)

I also get second hand ones from Ebay, genuine HP in my case. The last one was a couple of quid, bit different to the £100+ they cost new! Lifetime warranty means they get replaced next day if they fail too :)

Have you actually put that theory to the test? Wouldn't they demand proof of purchase before they replaced them?

I've been using compatible GBICs in my HP gear for sometime now. For the price, I thought I'd give it a go - ~£40 compared to the £200+ that HP wanted. Seem to work fine with no issues so far. Get ours from gbics.com

Yup, twice in the last week. No PoP required. Just needs the serial number from the GBIC.

Be careful with firmware updates. We've had compatible GBICs which work to begin with but have had our switches go "LOL NO!" after a firmware update.
