Garacesh Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 Whilst I'm not building an image, I am playing around with the tech preview to see what software works and doesn't work, etc and using the Local Computer Policy to figure out what GPO's we'll need if/when we go live with it. Anyone else started doing this yet, care to shed some light/discussion about what they've found? We do already have W8/8.1 policies set and I presume they'd be similar if not identical but I expect some changes here and there.
Garacesh Posted January 23, 2015 Author Posted January 23, 2015 I wouldn't even think of deploying the tech preview to staff, but there's no harm in figuring out what's changed since 8/8.1 and being ready for the official release. When W10 comes out I know we're going to get asked about it by the staff.
JRowley Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 I have a server and client set up as virtual clients, I haven't started playing around with the configuration yet as the builds we are using at too early in the development cycle in my view. They are still adding features so the configuration and Group Policy settings are still subject to change, it's something I might look at over the summer however when the OS is more likely to be feature complete.
3s-gtech Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 I don't tend to do it until release - I then setup a VM and play with the policies then. While I don't like to miss the boat, I find I have plenty of time after RC to do this testing before I have any need to actually deploy it. Things like adding the new ADMXs into the Central Store won't be happening until the OS is ready to roll.
Garacesh Posted January 23, 2015 Author Posted January 23, 2015 I don't tend to do it until release Well I started a VM when it first came out just to test initial setup etc and haven't really touched it (save for windows updates) since. Figured with all these announcements about W10 I'd update the latest build and check everything works (as well as things like how policy-assigned start menus work now, given the start menu changed a bit). Just a standard VM hosted on my machine, but part of the doman. Nothing fancy. Plus. Y'know. Slow day.
LeMarchand Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 At the school I do most hours for, my computer runs Win 10. It has always seemed to pick up and apply the expected GPOs and when I was fine tuning some GPOs this week all the changes applied at the next reboot. My machine doesn't have a redirected Start Menu, though. Have tried to keep the SM in its default layout to see if I get on with it. Aesthetically, I prefer the much (unfairly, IMHO) maligned W8 style menu. OTH, as I have the programs I use daily on the taskbar and the couple I use occasionally pinned in the mini-metro thing it doesn't seem worth bothering changing for work.
sted Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 I added a vm of 10 enterprise to a live domain tbh windows 7 policies just work I needed to do nowt to them (apart from any wmi filtering) even most of the software worked only issues I had were I think down to virtual sound card not being liked
