Quick question - fast response needed

you'll find if you dont sign it he will give you a weeks notice for every year you have worked and you either sign it or you go down the road.

 

i have just been in this situation and this is what unison advised me!!!!

 

can you believe it!!! all in the pockets of the council i was advised to sign it and the money would be sorted after the paris thing...still haven't signed it yet and the head still has not issued me notice. this has been going on since april this year

It wouldn't be that members donate £2 to set it up ... it would be members agreeing to pay £50 a year to cover things like insurance, legal costs, perks that we can but into, protected areas of the site with information only given to those who have paid (something I seriously disagree with as we want members to provide information for *everyone*) ...

 

As mentioned in the previous thread ... it is a serious undertaking and the 4700+ members also include many that would not be interested. Even if we were to get 2000+ you are looking at the organisation employing 5 people, including buying into legal services as required.

 

The best bet is to all put pressure on existing unions to recognise the issues and provide support and advice.

How about talking to someone like PAT - they already have the PAtT section that is for non-teaching staff in schools - perhaps some sort of alliance could be formed with them (or someone like them) to create a good package for us techies?

 

I specifically avoided Unison because I thought they seemed too close to the councils for comfort.

To certain degree (granted we have done less this year) is part of what we do anyway. We always fight this fine line as membership of edugeek all have different expectations of the site. some see us/want us to be a union, some a pressure group and some a forum and it is getting the right balance to please everyone.

 

We always said we work to better our membership lives be that offering free cpd to providing forum to get technical support.

 

We try and pressure as many people that will listen to us on issues such as bsf, pay, jobs etc etc

 

On to issue of unions and working with them we love to work with unions but they can be very closed sometimes.

 

I will recall a email I had with a union person for large support staff union (no not unison) and about support staff working group I asked can they share info on it so we could keep large % of sector informed and short answer was no why should we?

 

So if anyone got any person they know nationally within a union (or any org) then introduce me as said we will talk to anyone..

 

If want as an idea if someone wants to put together a briefing document on issues effect technical staff in education I will make sure it gets sent to every education contact for all the support staff unions.

I don't know if you all remember the issue I was having with my head. He wanted me to be a Techy/TA Hybrid. Well I resigned last week and guess how my job as ICT/Network Manger has been advertised:

what happened in the end, did you go to a union and discuss it, what is the salary for this ICT Teaching Assistant, also what does the job description have on it, any chance of a link.

So are you saying your not being replaced then? There is no way they can advertise for an ICT teaching assistant and then expect them to be the NM. What happened to the pay scale? Have you got a link to the job?

 

Sounds like your better off out of the place. Hope you got another job? Did the union help at all?

On the edugeek union idea - could we form some sort of sub group under the major unions? I'd assume GMB or Unison - perhaps a dual allegiance?

 

Get their backing - and be a support group to all those in our profession. They could provide the backup re legal costs (+whatever it is they provide).

 

Surely they'd go for it - a chance to gain more members and the benefit to us of representation for our situation??
