This greatly concerns me for a number of reasons, some of which are stated above. Personally I worry about abuse of power as much as anything. On this occasion I've decided that politicians need to know that not everyone wants 'greater security' at any cost. Hence I've taken the unusual (for me) step of writing to my MP (https://www.writetothem.com). I would encourage others to do likewise.

Nah, the XBox One and Amazon Fire TV came out long after 1984.

Xbox One doesn't have this problem, can't say the same for the Amazon Fire TV though, never used one.

Even though Facebook is responsible for a lot - I don't think you can blame it in this situation...

What if they'd just done it over a phonecall? Do you blame the phone companies for not stopping them?

What happened WAS wrong, and if they were on the 'watched' list then it could have been preventable, but does this really justify monitoring everything everyone does? I agree that something should be done, but as to what? I don't know.

The kneejerk reaction of "Monitor ALL the things" is plain wrong, it's using a nuke where a scalpel is needed.

I find it impossible to believe if they do start snooping it will be 100% for legitimate purposes and as witch has said where will it end? How long before it's in pubs etc?

Was it 1984 where they couldn't turn the TV off and it had a camera / microphone in it?

Newer versions of windows phone are always listening with teh mic to see if you want to use cortana (ms siri) you can litteraly just say hey cortana and get it to do stuff so the mic must always be listening.

You cant police everyone all the time look at that numpty who on facebook (or might of been twitter) a few years back wrote something along the lines of im going to blow up doncaster airport because he was mad about something there. There was never any intention to actually do it he just said something stupid and got arrested and charged (later let off i believe). again weve all said stuff like im going to kill you to people that in a word scan looks downright dangerous but in reality was nothing at all at best it was a poor choiuce of words this is esp true when things arnt put in context. This is where any sort of automated scan is going to fall down and unless you have huge amounts of man power thats the best byou are going to overall get.

You cant have 100% security its impossible all you can do is take reasonable measures to protect the majority. Where the current numptys in westminster draw the line on whats reasonable and where i draw it are 2 different places but i doubt any party draws it in a much different place.

A good reason not to use any of the always-on voice recognition assistants. Especially when they use cloud-based voice recognition.

Actually I think they were right in that case.

We've all said that we're going to kill people? I can't think of a time that I've threatened to kill someone or to cause damage to property since I got out of my teenage years, honestly. If someone were to say that they're going to kill me, even if they meant it as a 'joke' you can be damned sure I'd be taking it very, very seriously.

Not sure I entirely agree with that. With unlimited resources you could quite comfortably have 100% security. Of course no one would want to live in a world where that was going on (and the definition of living may have to be revised due to security-imposed limits). The problem is that there are diminishing returns. For a small amount of effort you can prevent 9 out of 10 threats. A much, much larger effort will prevent 99 our of 100, and so on. There has to come a time where you accept that the risk is small and therefore acceptable instead of pouring more resources into trying to solve the issue.

I think this all falls under safe harbour laws doesn't it? Facebook are the same as any other service provider, in that regard.

Lets say you run a VPS service and someone is using your service to run a website with extremely illegal content. You never set the site up, you had no knowledge of what the user was doing and the user signed an EULA to say they'd use the service responsibly. Assuming nobody ever reports this to you, are you then responsible for the actions of the user?

Or for a non-electronic example: Somebody rents a safe deposit box from a bank and uses it to store illegal contraband. Assuming nobody ever reports this to the bank, are they responsible for the contents of the box?

You've never said something like "if he's used the last of the milk I'll kill him!"

I know this is obviously a jokey comment but it could be picked up by this sort of monitoring and, as nobody seems to use common sense anymore, escalated to ridiculous and dangerous levels.

No. But I am unusually placid and mild-mannered.

Even if someone does say that, would you bellow it aloud in a public place?

Apart from the "oh that flipping idiot i'll kill him if he forgot to buy milk" type comments do they realise that social media is used for all kinds of groups and people?

Counterstrike players use twitter and facebook for fan pages, its a first person shooter involving "terrorist's" vs counter terrorists where you have to plant/defuse a bomb, by killing the other team, how many times will people discussing that get flagged?

Words like "bomb" and "killer" are slang words used by people, how many of those will be flagged up if keyword monitoring is used?

without context a lot of people could be in trouble if snippits of convocations are used.

People do, all the time. Heard someone in the Indian saying "if he's touched my stuff, I'll f'in kill him".
