Resetting the Local admin password

What tools do people use to reset a local admin password these days?

 

It seems my old linux boot CD doesnt work with Windows 7/8 any more.

Recently did it using Windows on a memory stick, then doing the utilman.exe->cmd.exe hack (on a Windows 8.1 tablet). It's effective if the machine hasn't had startup repair disabled. If it's on the domain, you can do it by logging on as a domain admin account, or with a startup script.

I've used an OphCrack Linux boot disk to do it before (including on Windows 8.1). Though it is more a password cracker than a resetter. It did however crack the password in less than 2 minutes!

Locksmith on the appropriate DaRT disc as first go, otherwise one of the tools on UBCD4WIN (I think it's PasswordRenew).

Hirens works fine for Windows 7, not sure about Windows 8 as I haven't needed to do that yet.

I used this site to make a p/w reset disk: Offline Windows Password & Registry Editor

The 'Offline Password Reset' tool built into the Hirens CD works with Win7 for sure.

I do this from Windows Startup Repair CMD or Windows PE CMD.
