We're in north-east Hampshire. I've seen some stories of laptops sent off to Internet companies advertising a repair service, and the laptops don't come back, hence I'd prefer to use a recommended site.

Fair enough, but i would never really trust an "online" shop in the first place. I guess it's a bit of a lottery but generally i've found there isn't really a nationwide repair service...

What about those chaps at Thinklogic that are always quoting Lenovo laptops out on here. Surely they can help. Worth giving them a poke?

Just phoned them. They do not do repairs. They recommended LanWay

The staff member says they caught the power cable on the top left corner of the laptop, which lifted the casing away. Having looked in more detail, the base of the chassis is secured to the top by a screw. The hinge requires that this part of the case is solid for something to push against. With no solid chassis the hinge is free to move, so it's just a mess.

DIY - I normally search google for the model and post fix hmm and or I have the lenovo service guide lines site which shows how to replace FRU's / same as the hmm ( hardware maintenance manual

If you need confirmation of part numbers, call Lenovo up and give them the laptop details and they should be able to advise on what parts and what said part numbers are ( FRU ) and normally you can find said parts on ebay

Order the relevant parts and once you have them with the relevant hmm sections printed off or the website ( which I will post later on ) and you can repair it yourself

hmm = hardware maintenance manual

If its a Lenovo ThinkPad T430 then you would search

T430 hmm

Or

Lenovo T430 hmm

Also easier to save the pdf to a working pc --> open it locally using a pdf reader / viewer and you can then use the bookmarks on the pdf to find the section(s) / pages you need

Lenovo use Teleplan in Colchester for Warranty repairs so it could be worth giving them a call.

All of the Lenovo Consumer and Edge brands seem to have a weakness around the hinges so much so I've learned to become a bit of an expert in the use of Epoxy Putty (the stuff you repair leaking pipes with) and a Dremel.

As you move up the product lines you see a vast improvement in the quality of the chassis especially around the hinges to the point where I still have some Thinkpad R61s Core Duos in daily service after 5 years.

Lenovo are without doubt the epitome of you get what you pay for, if you have a fleet of the cheaper models then hinge and screw tightening needs to be on the maintenance list.

Some of the hinges are simply sandwiched between upper and lower castings so just a tweak with a decent screwdriver every year can keep them in good working order.
