Smartboard SB580 woes

Howdy.

 

We've an SB580 (at least I think it is, certainly one of the older ones which has a serial-USB connection) that has decided to stop playing ball all of a sudden. The PC picks it up as a device and everything, but no interactivity.

 

Any pointers? I thought that it might be a driver issue with it not picking up the correct drivers, as I had the exact same issue with another board and that fixed it after finding them manually. We're running 8.1 here.

If it is a older board try these as i have found the new end of the smartnotebook software doesn't like the older boards.

Have you got another Smart serial-USB cable you could try?

I've got a spare you can borrow if you like...

I would say the same - probably the cable - I have had a few of these older ones fail recently

I have a few smartboard cables lying around that have been taken out when we upgraded to interactive Projectors. I can send you one if you are interested?

I've recently run into this problem with our SB580 boards. It would appear that when you install the "Smartboard cable" driver for me at least, it is not creating the COM port.

 

I run the driver uninstall command as per instructions from Smart Technologies, and then changed the USB port of the cable. Windows then re-detected the cable, and recommended a driver from Prolific. It would appear that they are using the Prolific PL2303 USB-to-Serial chips.

 

I grabbed the driver from here: Products and installed it. Went into the Smartboard control panel utility, ran the detection wizard and it found it instantly albeit we're using version 11 and it does say it is not supported but it does work as expected.

 

Hope this helps anyone coming across this problem in future.

Hi we have an sb580 that we decided to use but lost the db9 to sub cable and software. I use a standard serial cable and connect a serial to usb adaptor but the pc will not detect the projector. Does this smartboard needs power or it will draw power from the db9 cable?

Corrections:

-db9 to usb

Normally the smartboard SB580 doesn't require a separate power supply, however I'm not convinced the SB580 will work with any old serial to USB cable - I think it has to be a proper Smart one.

Are you getting any LEDs lighting up on the SB580 when you connect your serial to USB cable? If the ready LED is not on at all then you need a new cable. If its flashing red/green there are some tips on the smart website which you could try:

I have a spare USB to Serial cable, but as you are in Canada, that aint gonna help you much!
