I've recently run into this problem with our SB580 boards. It would appear that when you install the "Smartboard cable" driver for me at least, it is not creating the COM port. I run the driver uninstall command as per instructions from Smart Technologies, and then changed the USB port of the cable. Windows then re-detected the cable, and recommended a driver from Prolific. It would appear that they are using the Prolific PL2303 USB-to-Serial chips. I grabbed the driver from here: Products and installed it. Went into the Smartboard control panel utility, ran the detection wizard and it found it instantly albeit we're using version 11 and it does say it is not supported but it does work as expected.
