Oh, that's absolutely true. I'm sick of games being produced aimed purely at multi-player. I want to be anti-social after work. I want to settle down and kill some dumb AI bots, not have to deal with more people!

given up online play its all full off foul mouthed insert expletive heres to the point where its just about 0 fun anymore

yes games today cosst more to develop than years aghop but they have a much bigger audience as well so for example mario world on snes shipped 20.5 million (more than twice as many as the next nearest game at 9 million) gta5 to pick a random example has sold so far 32.5 million copies

Like @LosOjos and @localzuk I'm not keen on online gaming. I don't have the time to dedicate to it. I find the "Destiny" model a tad worrying in that one almost has to play online to get the best from the game.

On a side note: I also don't give a stuff about trophies etc. Woohoo! I finished Chapter 3 of "Wolf Among Us". When Angelina Jolie hears that it'll be "seeya, Brad"!

That's only about 1.5x the units, i'm sure a lot more than 1.5x went into producing the game.

Bare in mind, that older games were platform specific, Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong etc on Nintendo, Sonic, Virtua Fighter, Alex the Kidd on Sega. It was the odd exception for a game to be on both at the time (Street Fighter springs to mind). Nowadays, almost all games are multiplatform, with just a handful being console specific.

To be fair to Destiny you dont have to play against anyone. It's online only, but single player so if you dont want to play against anyone and be teabagged, you dont need to. I've spent nearly 200 hours in it and I could honestly count the PvP hours on one hand. It can be solo'd apart from the Raid (and PvP). No online abuse either as no game chat or text.

I mostly play single play too. I prefer it.

I do see the point about inflation, and I understand that it really can't be overlooked, I was looking at it from a bit of a "Jaded and misty eyed" pov looking at my childhood a bit there, I always paid sub-150 for any of these consoles, I just think that in the last 8-10 years to me things have leapt up in price a fair bit now, xbox one/ps4 game prices seem horrific when I go through the supermarket aisle, esp compared to PC prices for games, Online stuff is never discounted much at all, though the console prices will no doubt come down as time wears on.

I think the only way that companies like EA will stop their horrible DLC practices now is if people boycott their games, which on the whole seems to be very unlikely happening given the franchises that they have bought into now and maintain, I used to love their BF series of games, up until they refused to make BF2 work with windows 7 properly, despite people paying like I did for 3 expansion packs on top, they blatantly wanted everyone channeled into BF3 and beyond, which my PC at the time would not touch.

I think I dread the inevitable in about 6/7 years time when my boy gets the console gaming bug usually because a mate has it, especially more now as you have all their favourite cartoons available in games like Disney Infinity and Skylanders, depending on the console ofc and everything is usually full of microtransactions for items.

I also realise the irony in this that I am a WoW player on the PC, subscribing £8 a month for a game plus paying £35 for an expansion (Currently though they get released every 2/3 years and content in between them is not extra), theres around 7 million of us playing some sort of subscription like that for this game, (though the asian model is different and based on time rather than per month and they have severe limits on playtime from what I understand too) It is sad, you can also see though the corruption in this game seeping in with it being bought out by Activision/Vivendi, as there are now plenty of "for-sale" often limited edition vanity items in game and even paid for levelling boosts put into the game now, which Blizz banned people for in the past, but its ok to use theirs now for £40 a time. I also massively despise the fact that their "Addon" services now like Faction-Change/X-Realm Transfers have gone up in price too, considering that you are paying for an automated script to be run there with limited interactions from their agents or so it seems.

Thanks for that, the reviews made it sound as if the single player was minimal and that you'd be losing out majorly if you weren't doing all the online shizz.

I played through all of the destiny story on my tod and completed the game the strikes I did with two other players (matchmaking) the only thing so far you need "real" friends with is the raid which is 6 player, you need to do the raid to get to the max level 30, there is chat about introducing matchmaking to the raid which would be good.

On DLC I think its a great thing if done correctly, I hate things like Battlefield Premium in BF4 this was just an excuse to pay to software test.

To be honest - I don't generally have too much a problem with DLC, unless it's silly 'day one' stuff...

Someone said earlier that it's a way of developers getting a bite of the preowned market, and let's face it - the preowned market is huuuuuge.

Most DLC I see as completely pointless to me, hence costumes / vanity packs, shortcut packs and the like. I see the point of them, for people who want that particular look, or who want extra in-game money, or even early unlocks of weapons.

I prefer to earn my in-game loot, but that's up to me. Yes, people have got the same by throwing money at it - but it's their money at the end of the day.

Extra content / missions? Yes, I like this in general. If I like a game enough to play it all the way through and get everything, then I like the option of being able to play a little more - as long as it's appropriately priced. I don't lose anything in most games for not owning the DLC.

For example - Borderlands 2, I didn't buy the extra characters, or any of the mission packs as I wasn't interested enough to, until I saw Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep. I'm a roleplayer, so it appealed to me. I held off until it was on sale though and I got it for a pittance.

Mass Effect's DLC? Yes, I bought big chunks of it as I enjoyed the series so much.

I get an iteration of Battlefield every couple of increments, but I'm not usually bothered about the DLC. It just means I don't play those maps.

I DO have a problem with overpriced DLC (such as £20 for two multiplayer maps or whatever.) and day one content. If it's content released on the same day as the game - It should be IN the game, it's almost like you're being made a second class citizen by not buying the "Ultra Gold Day Zero Darkside Warrior Edition". I looked at the different number of versions of Watchdogs when that was released with a large amount of what the ? Instead - I bought the normal version. Then, I can play the game and decide if I want DLC or not.

Let me be the first [and probably only] person to say... I don't care about devs opinions on preowned games.

No other industry tries to come up with ways to make money from second hand sales. Why should PUBLISHERS be continuously getting profit from the same physical game? [Yeah it's not the devs that make money, it's publishers.]

@X-13 Okay - foul on my part.

I think DLC is the natural progression of expansion packs (from the old PC days), and its so prolific because it's so easy to shunt out.

I remember buying the expansion to Diablo 2 to name just one. (Although that did add two classes and a shed load of new content)

It's a viscous circle. If they can't recover the costs of making the game they go out of business. If they go out of business, no more new games - or at least we get used to a world were AAA gaming dies out and we return to the 16bit era of 2.5D platformers and shooters being offered by indie devs.

I know this is Square Enix, so may as well take with a pinch of salt given their known development practices, and it's an old story, they since turned it around but...

Square-Enix reports $61 million loss as console game sales sag | Digital Trends

When you can't turn a profit of selling 3million copies of a game at £40 each (guessed average), somethings got to be wrong. I'd be interested in finding out how many people actually played both games vs how many bought them. I got them both through PS+ so they cost me nothing but I'm sure Sony paid Square Enix a nice wadge for them.

If more people bought the game new instead of secondhand would the average game price be lower? Would they be selling closer to, say, 10 million copies, had the second hand sales been new sales would they have turned a profit on these games?

With stories like this it's understandable why publishers want to try and tap in to that market and recover some of their costs.

As I said before, it's not like they have the multiple revenue streams of the movie or record industries.

Extra content, I'm fine with it. When it's appropriately priced.

Doubly so when they release it as a standalone thing as well.

Triply so when it gets it's own physical release. [<3 my Infamous: First Light disk]

A bunch of skins/weapons that used to be an in-game reward to playing... Nope.avi

They're usually balance breaking. 1 pre-order/DLC weapon that can literally take you through the entire game in a RPG. Why buy the game if you're going to cheese it?

And unlock packs tend to make things pay-to-win.

You know what? I actually agree with that. Used car sales, for example, get to go ahead without any sort of trickleback.. And that's a pretty huge market, too.

Like I said earlier, I'd be cool with things like one-time online pass fees if the publishers hosted their own dediboxes for servers. But more often than not, they don't.

DLC is pretty much the evolution of expansion packs, though. In theory, they're the same thing (they add more to the game) except one is digitally distributed whereas the other used to come on disks. Unfortunately the amount of new content is severely lower than back in't my daaee..

Well said there, their way around it is to lock us in with a lot of this stuff.

Yup, that annoyed me as well... But I may grab the season pass. [it's cool you can use it as a discount when all the DLC has been released.]

I like the game. so I want moar. The extra costumes/weapons are meh [except 1920's gangster].

I like the "Digital Trips"... Seriously, "Alone" could be it's own game. I would play the butts out of that.

Annoyingly, I watched TotalBiscuit's WTF is... about CoD: AW last night and I'm shocked to say it actually looks really good! Less gritty brown-grey SIR YES SIR and more bouncy, movement-oriented, Unreal Tournament-style which looks awesome.

He did a WTF is.. about a CoD game? i would have thought he would struggle to find anyone who doesn't know wtf cod is!

That reminds me, i haven't watched any zero punctuation in a while...

WTF Is... is Total Biscuit's review series. I was surprised at first that he was recommending a COD game and then that Activision had actually progressed the franchise for the better. DLC worries still keeping me cautious though, the last few CODs have been silly with enormous lists of stuff. :/

Ah, i thought his WTF is... series was for indie/little known games. My bad.

CoD has been bad since 5 in my opinion, mainly due to them being horrible console ports with no modding support, The last few didn't even had dedicated servers for PC gamers.

It is a new developer though, that might explain it. Infinity Ward / Treyarch used to develop them.

Easy mistake to make, but he's done WTF is.. about titles from all genres.. From Shadow of Mordor to Octodad

I'd recommend watching his (or any, really) review of Advanced Warfare just to get a look at the mechanics of it.. It honestly doesn't look like it plays like the previous titles.. Air dashing, a wider variety of weapons/stats, character customisation and abilities like butt gravity slams, temporary invisibility.. Even your killstreak perks (which are now based on score, not killstreaks) are customisable.. I daresay, as someone who really dislikes the CoD series generally - that Advanced Warfare actually looks like a lot of fun!

Maybe I'll pick it up if it goes on sale..

It's still Peer-to-Peer, though, annoyingly. No dedicated servers :(
