What is this?

We have this in our main switch cab, and has all of a sudden starting 'clicking' very quickly and is quite noisy. I don't really know what it is, the previous NM didn't leave behind any notes on this or anything at all so I dare not touch it.

 

It has a CAT 5 wire coming out of it, that doesn't plug into anything. At the back are 2 fiber optic cables and power. Does anyone know what it is? or if I'm safe to just unplug it? A quick Google of the model, manufacture etc brings up nothing

looks like a BT fibre converter and the clicking will be the powere supply which has failed

It looks like a device to connect to a WAN circuit. Possibly for an old broadband connection or and old connection the LA. I think SHUCK is something to do with BT.

That's a very old BT Fibre circuit CPE. The yellow label is the circuit number. These circuits were replaced by 21CN in most areas. Edited October 31, 2014 by Geoff

Yep, SHUK is/was one of the older short haul data circuit systems for BT broadband, used by a lot of LAs back in the data for connection out to schools. They have been long since superseded in most places.

 

If the CAT5 is not even plugged into anything then you are probably safe to power off. In the very unlikely event that you lose Internet connectivity... well, then you'll know what you were using it for.

As in so many casess, if everything works then you don't change anything!

 

There are many computer room floors dating back to mainframe days with several miles of redundant cable underneath that nobody will remove "just in case"

BT never seem to collect old kit when circuits end, we have a stack of the stuff in our basement gathering dust all property of BT and they have no urge to collect.

One place I worked we had a central network cabinet clear out that resulted in an Ebay sale.

 

Having spoken to the respective people who's stickers were on the top of the kit to establish the stuff was ours to sell, we got shot of 2x worldwide packets fibre modems, 2x Cisco 1700 series routers, a Nokia fibre modem, an Ericsson adsl modem, and 2 cisco 2900 series routers.

 

Kept the IT dept in spray cleaner, cans of air and heatsink compound for a while!

We should see if we can find some monstrous dinosaur of a piece of comms kit that belongs to them. Something like a 8u, 30-something-Kg Stat Mux chassis. or one of those monumental Mitel telephone switches!

We have some kit that is several U's of BTs in one of our racks, all the lines say disconnected / not terminated and we don't see anything indicating life / usefulness but its effort to un-rack it and take it on the tube etc...

But with some cunning e Marketing you could probably monetize the YouTube video to your advantage!
