Dos_Box Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 OK, it's the first winter weather scare story of the season: UK weather: Is Britain braced for worst winter in 100 years? - Mirror Online But it would be nice to get the kids sledges out of the garage this winter, unlike the last one. Couldn't even find any snow in Cumbria! 1
Popular Post Andrew_C Posted October 30, 2014 Popular Post Posted October 30, 2014 I think you might be confusing the Mirror with a "newspaper". 5
Dos_Box Posted October 30, 2014 Author Posted October 30, 2014 TBH, I'm surprised it wasn't the Express running with this
SteveM555 Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 I remember a similar article last year, entitled something like '100 days of snow on the way' - We didn't even have 100 flakes. I am not sure where they get the forecasts from; they can't even predict what's going to happen next week.
Geoff Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Bookies have 7/1 odds for snow at crimbo. Probably a more reliable metric than long range weather forecasts or newspaper articles at this point. Weather betting odds | bet Online at Ladbrokes.com
eyetea Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 My favourite variation of this is where someone posts it on facebook without looking at the date and its x years ago!
SteveBentley Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 It's Exacta Weather, same source as the Express's usual nonsense. See BBC - Blogs - Weather - What's behind the 'coldest winter for 100 years' headline?
LiamH Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 BBC News - Met Office to build £97m supercomputer This might help them make more accurate(ish) predictions! If you want I can bring some snow over when I travel back to England for Christmas Dos_Box.. not sure how well it will hold up in a cooler on a 9 hour flight though!
VeryPC Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 I think is is a classic case of "Oh no, we don't have a headline for tomorrows edition and the presses roll in 30 minutes!". Media companies can have this kind of purely speculative material ready to bung in at a moments notice whenever the dreaded "slow news day" lands. Probably absolutely nothing in it. Al

Ketlane Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 From the ever-helpful and usually accurate Wikipedia: 'Betteridge's law of headlines is an adage that states: "Any headline which ends in a question mark can be answered by the word no." ' 4
Bompalompalomp Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I'm gambling on last year's no snow ever, otherwise I'm back on buses or getting lifts from mates.
ICTDirect_Dave Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 (edited) TBH, I'm surprised it wasn't the Express running with this You mean like this? Winter weather 2014 UK set for ARCTIC FREEZE in days as mild autumn fuels temperature drop | Nature | News | Daily Express They ran it two days ago. Made me laugh Edit: I particularly like the "CLICK HERE FOR MORE SNOW CHAOS PICTURES" link. They do make me chuckle. No doubt it's got something to do with Diana. jinnantonnixx Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Biggest winter storm EVER to wreck Christmas!!! | Benvironment I'm afraid that the Express is suffering from self-induced weather-hyperbole-inflation. It only has itself to blame. I'm waiting for Snowmaggedonpocalypse . That can't be far round the corner, though.
Gibbo Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Almost two years old, but still accurate: BBC - Blogs - Weather - What's behind the 'coldest winter for 100 years' headline?
