Favorite piece of non game software?

Just interested to see what other people think their must have software is that they use all the time?

 

For me it has to be Microsoft OneNote its got to be one of their best products. I did originally use Evernote because there was not Mac client but once they released OneNote for Mac i jumped, and now it have it on my Mac, iPad, iPhone, Desktop Mac, it has enabled me to go almost paperless both in work and personal i love it and would not want to be without it now. Got a few teachers using it at work now and its all they talk about they love their iPads just for One Note.

I tend to use it in place of a notepad, word processor, desktop publisher. It has to be the most versatile and most powerful bit of software on the planet. You can makes some cracking flat file databases, a bit of work could probably make them relational. Using cell formula alone it's possible to write games with it, it is a pretty powerful programming language in it's own right before you even touch VBA. I even use it for network diagrams in place of something like Viso.

 

Amazing bit of software. (I'd still prefer to be playing The Last of Us though )

I have a soft spot for Notepad++. All the joy* of hand-coding in plain text, but with such fantastic syntax highlighting, and no end of useful features. And tabs! Tabs make everything better.

 

*no, srsly. But I only really code in HTML/CSS/PHP so there's definite advantages in hand code, as opposed to "whatever rubbish Dreamweaver spews out", especially when it comes to troubleshooting CSS.

My favourite piece of work software is probably SCCM - my happiest days at work are when I can just sit their configuring it to do things for me.

My favourite non-game piece of software based on the amount i use it though is probably VLC or Chrome

Going back to One Note I have to say Im a recent convert (as of yesterday). Before then I never really got the point of it - but I was drawing out our backup systems and wanted a piece of software where I could write up here, draw lines a bit over here add notes along side. Started doing it in Word and thought - "this is clumsy there has to be a better way". Remebered about One Note and the penny dropped. Its great for sprawling diagrams etc.

 

Back on topic Notepad++, FolderSize & PSTools are always in my toolkit!

Just got a Surface Pro, so have stuck Office Pro Plus 2013 on there - started having a play with OneNote so I could use the surface and the pen for note taking in meetings etc - not got too far with it so far, but liking what I see.

 

VLC is also up there - very powerful bit of software, we use it to multicast a BBC News feed around our school, and the Firefox client to subscribe to the feed and display on an info display webpage - very useful.

Another vote for OneNote, it's made documenting systems so much easier and it's the only native Windows 8 app I prefer over its desktop equivalent. Also means the Surface RT I adopted in work has a purpose in life now
