Today at a product event in Cupertino, California, Apple announced that it would be releasing OS X Yosemite to the public. The eleventh major release of OS X was announced back in June at WWDC, and Apple began sending public beta builds to interested parties back in July. Though it includes other new features, the operating system's most noticeable change is its redesigned user interface, which echoes the overhaul Apple gave iOS 7 last year.

 

Yosemite's brighter, flatter applications and icons, its heavy use of translucency, and its switch to Helvetica Neue will be familiar to anyone with an iPhone or iPad, but as we saw in our coverage of the first public beta, Apple has been careful to preserve shadows and depth in many places throughout the OS. Along with the design overhaul, Yosemite also ushers in newly redesigned versions of OS X staple apps like Safari and iTunes.

 

Yosemite will be available as a free download from the Mac App Store later today, and it can be installed on any supported Mac running OS X 10.6 or later. If your Mac can run either Mountain Lion (version 10.8) or Mavericks (version 10.9), then it can run Yosemite. The full list of supported machines is as follows:

To create a bootable OS X 10.10 Yosemite USB install drive either download DiskMaker X or run the command below in Terminal (change "Untitled" to the name of your USB flash drive if it is different).

 

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/[color="#FF0000"]Untitled[/color] --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app --nointeraction

I've ran the public beta on my iMac and MacBook air since it was released. No major issues or major changes really.

I've got a 2014 Macbook Air sealed at home that i bought to replace my 2012 Air but left it sealed until Yosemite came out, so I'm going to get no sleep tonight

 

More happy they are keeping the iPad Mini 1, but making it even cheaper, we're about to get 150 for our school so will cost even less now.

Hoping it fixes some of the AD integration issues of 10.9. Would love to update and consolidate our Macs, with SSDs too.

AD Integration issues, we have run Snow Leopard, Mountain Lion and Mavericks on all of our MacBook Pros without an issue, although we do have a last generation Xserve running Snow Leopard server still doing the machine management :-)

Well I have upgraded my iMac, did the setup, then I had to give it one final logout and back in once the setup had complete to get it reestablise all the network mounts (have to do this if I leave it in standby over night anyways so no biggy)

 

All seems to be working :-) Including my windows V<

Only thing I have had to do so far us update Apple Configurator.

 

I need to find out how to get the free iWork now.

I managed to download it in under 1 and a half hours last night at home. I reckon it's going to be really slow going today.

I read the Siracusa review and didn't see any major problems, but I'll be holding off for a few weeks until I can confirm it doesn't break anything we care about.

Oh I am not doing a student roll out yet, I will let staff use it, but for students I will update the image, and they have iWork on them already so it should just update those ones :-) They are already on Mavericks due to neading it for the latest version of Logic.

We're just putting it on a newly bought Mac Mini. 18 minutes to download

 

Thankfully this machine is ours, not a student one.
