Staff Notices on Log On

Hi All

A member of staff came up to me today and mentioned that at a previous school they had a system that when the staff log on to a machine it flashes up with a message if there's any urgent news or notices and on the message is button that you can click and it takes you to a more in depth notice. In this instance the member of staff wants it for pastoral updates, i was wondering if anyone had a system like this or similar in place and could advise me on how to go about setting something like this up.

In its simplest form, you could do this with a web page - just set that page to open on login and have the details there.

If you want something slightly more complex than just loading a web page each time, you could do this fairly simply with a logon script configured to display a message. How you store the messages would be up to you, but it doesn't need to be especially sophisticated for something quite simple.

 

VBScript or PowerShell would be fine for this. If there's no unread messages, no popup. If there are then simply generate a dialog with two options - one of which opens the full announcement in your browser.

We had something like this which ended up being ignored because of the messages on there that people didn't want to read. We just had complaints that people needed to click through messages before they could get rid of the window and we ended up dropping it. I think for us information on a web page(or staff email) is more appropriate as those that want the information know where to find it rather than force everyone to read notices they don't want which means they then end up ignoring everything.

I'd agree.

 

Urgent messages fine, here staff are reminded regularly by the Principal and SMT to check their emails.

We put things on the staff wallpaper, but no idea as to whether this is an effective delivery method

When we log on, a web page opens with the staff portal, which displays the daily notice, the weekly notice, selected timetabled events and general staff notices (eg for sale, baby news, etc). A recent staff survey said 70% thought this was an effective method of communicating info. IMO it's a lot better than emailing the daily notice to everyone. When students log on, they get the student portal, which contains links to email, moodle, student union, etc.
