IPhone 4s & ios8

Anyone tried this yet? Technical articles on the web advise against it, but is it really as bad as they make out? I'm getting fed up with the upgrade reminders already.

I've been running it for a couple of weeks and the only thing I've noticed is the slow response when answering calls - there's a slight delay between swiping to accept and the call connecting. Other than that it's fine on my 4S.

My GF has a 4S but she hasn't put the update on it yet. Whether that's through lazyness, ambivalence or ignorance I'm not quite sure.

 

I have a 5 and there is a definite difference in terms of responsiveness between iOS 7 and 8. Sometimes it feels it takes a fraction of a second longer to respond to swipes and taps than it did before. It feels kind of artificial though, I wonder if it'll be smoothed out with 8.1.

 

Whelp, it'll have to wait until the 6S comes out until it gets replaced. And changing to an Android or Windows phone ain't something I'm gonna do.

I put it on my 32GB 4S. Seems to run well, but the phone was factory reset before updating. Haven't tested that much yet, still using my S2.

I have a 4s and I have to say it's the worst iOS yet for responsiveness and battery life. I used to be able to 16-17 hours a day now it's down to around 10-12, so nearly 30% down.

 

I just hope 8.1 update at the end of October will addresses issues.

 

My feeling is Apple have done this on purpose to force through a phone upgrade, but I'm sticking with my 4s @ £9 month.

I installed it on my 4s prior to my 6 coming. It wouldn't put it on anything before that. It was okay - but some features did suffer a fair degree of lag

Opinions seem a bit mixed. I think I'll leave off upgrading for the time being until the badge reminder drives me mad. I don't want to jailbreak it either before anyone suggests that.

As with all major upgrades I recommend doing a full restore to iOS8 rather than upgrading. This is always my procedure when a new version comes out and I find it resolves any performance based issues other users may be reporting. I haven't personally updated my iPhone 4S to iOS8 as I want to keep my jailbreak. Edited October 13, 2014 by tmoon-mint

Have now upgraded to 8.1 after reading more reviews, and it seems to be fine. No major slow downs and no major bugs. Not much to shout about either though, although the new speed dials are handy.

Have now switched from my Galaxy S2 to iPhone 4S on iOS 8.1. It's working well - quick, reliable. No complaints here. Impressed considering the meagre specs of the phone.

That's something I think a lot of people don't understand....or gloss over.

With tightly knit software/hardware you don't need the latest and greatest power sapping hardware. So when a processor in another phone is .01ghz faster, it doesn't really matter

IOS 8 has been pretty much OK one my iPhone 4s. I certainly wouldn't recommend that anyone skip it as it has some nice new features without much of a noticeable effect on performance.

 

I'm not so happy with the performance of my iPad Retina (3rd Gen) however. It's been pretty flaky since I upgraded it. Web pages in Safari often takes ages to render and sometimes require a page refresh before they'll load. A friend suggested it's better to install the update using iTunes connected to a PC after wiping the device rather than upgrading directly on it so I may have to give that a try to see if it improves things.

I have an iPhone 4S (A1387 I believe) running iOS 8.1 here, I didnt upgrade to 8 initially and left it on 7.1.2, because I had a scout around the web and got a feeling it would cause horrible slowdown and saw a few videos comparing the two OS which put me off bothering with it.

 

I upgraded after 8.1 and its running "OK" albeit a little slower than previously.

 

I did a bit of reading prior to this and have had to disable some features though to prevent it slowing down horribly -

 

Spotlight Search is off for me on the device, its pointless anyway to index your phone I think.

I also disabled the parallax background effects (the depth effects) on the phone and turned off the transparency on the device which improved the speed a fair bit on it so I am not unhappy with it.

 

Just waiting on the new battery I have ordered for it now to rejuvenate it a bit further

Don't you mean the 4S? Apple hasn't released iOS 8 for the iPhone 4. The last version for the iPhone 4 was iOS 7.1.2
