wickit Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 Hi we are currently looking at new wifi Is there anyone in our area that is using Ubiquiti UniFi that we can come and see in a working environment RH12 Postcode area cheers
synaesthesia Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 Not very close unfortunately but can tell you it's worth the money (which isn't a lot). If you want to do radius, proper guest authentication etc then make sure you go for the Pro versions and be warey of the non compliant POE (get the switches to keep it neat)
Chris_ Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 Sorry, can't be of any help as we're up North. Not very close unfortunately but can tell you it's worth the money (which isn't a lot). If you want to do radius, proper guest authentication etc then make sure you go for the Pro versions and be warey of the non compliant POE (get the switches to keep it neat) The Pro and AC UniFi access points are 802.3af POE compliant so any regular switches are fine. All UniFi access points support radius and guest authentication. At least we've not had any issues with them.
southhamster Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 +1 for Unifi. One thing to look out for is that the AC units are strictly speaking 803.3at (higher current), but we have got away with using our test one on 803.3af with no problems so far, although using a Cisco POE switch probably helps.
nicholab Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 You may have issues if you fully load the poe switch with 803.3at devices. Would be interesting what the power command says on Cisco.
XiJ Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 The unifi standard AP have transformed our local primaries (who come from non managed budget wifi AP's) We've used toughswitches so far for the 24v PoE
nicholab Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 This is a very good point after the amounts I seen spent on wifi in Birmingham primarys £8k per school. You could do wifi and your network with unfi and hp procurve.
synaesthesia Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Absolutely. I made one of my primaries very happy earlier this month when they'd informed me they have bought 8 iPads for staff, and seriously needed to consider managed wireless as opposed to a single point in the staffroom. Quotes were coming in between £5k and £8k. I borrowed a spare point (always keep some spares in case of failure as the only "bad" thing about these is the length of warranty returns, coming from the States) from another primary and they were blown away. A mere £500 later with a couple of hours of labour they had a full wireless system which did more than they could ever hope for with excellent coverage. The cost saving was so great that they are currently considering replacing their networking gear with the new Ubiquiti switches which will also tidy things up a lot, however I've asked for a bit of patience on that one until I can find some feedback on them.
Oaktech Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 They are really excellent units and well worth the money. If you are speccing a new install I would seriously consider the pro version over the standard version for it's gigabit interface and real POE compliance. The standard one utilises it's 100mb interface well, and will stand about 30 clients browsing with ease, but log on times can get a bit awkward with that kind of load. My supplier is wifi gear as they are within spitting distance of my house, but 4gon are fine and we've bought from them when wifi gear were out of stock. Hope this helps.
gshaw Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 We put Unifi Pros in for an external customer recently and it's been spot on, was the only solution that came in anywhere near their budget as well. Definitely worth the extra £££ to get the Gigabit connectivity etc. on the Pro version.
wickit Posted October 7, 2014 Author Posted October 7, 2014 Thanks for the info Not sure its worth going for AC yet as its only wave 1 and wave 2 is coming in the next 24months whats your thoughts on that?
themightymrp Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 +1 for Unifi. We put ours in over Summer and its been great. We only went for the N standard AP Pro's but down the road this is easy to upgrade to AC by swapping units pretty much like for like (from what I know)
JRowley Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 (edited) I'm using 17 Pro's and 3 AC's which are in the areas where external people are likely to be. Very happy with the system, as others have already said the Pro and AC models are both compliant with 802.3af, so you can use any PoE switch which conforms. Performance is good, we currently have 110 clients connected across the 20 access points, they offer fairly decent coverage, we are currently using radius to authenticate clients onto the network and it works like a charm. Can't fault it, so much so that I've suggested we upgrade our CCTV system to use Unifi's as it is again very affordable and manageable. Edited October 7, 2014 by JRowley
pow Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 I'm another fond Unifi supporter, got 24 UAP-ACs in production at a large primary school. I have noticed a significant improvement in the stability of the access points when switching to the 802.3af+ (the higher 30W PoE standard) switches - I was restarting some of the higher usage ones every week or so when they were hooked up to older 802.3af (15W PoE) switches - they'd be there and broadcasting but didn't ever appear to pass any traffic! I haven't hit the restart button one since July (when I rolled out the new switches).
difinity Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 (edited) I'm looking at some of these to replace some 3com WL-561 in a small primary, I'm trying to work out how many i will need, what's their internal range like ? There are about 8 classrooms, and about 40-50 devices. Edited October 31, 2014 by difinity
bodminman Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 We've been running 30+ Unifi APs for over 2 years now and haven't had any issues with the kit at all. Excellent value for money!
