OK if you have Netflix, but not worth subscribing solely to see this.
simpsonj Posted March 20, 2023 Posted March 20, 2023 Just finished watching Luther on Netflix. Didn't have the magic of the bbc series and I'm sorry.. Serkis is not a good actor unless he is covered in balls. Average at best. After watching Andor, I would have to disagree about Serkis!

See, whilst I didn't particularly like the story itself - it felt like it was pushing the 'gore'/'extreme' envelope for no real benefit - I did like Serkis' acting in it. I thought he did very well to make a believable character out of a very bad script/screenplay.
LeMarchand Posted March 25, 2023 Author Posted March 25, 2023 Noelle (Disney+) Noelle's Dad is Kris Kringle (aka Santa Claus) and she has been brought up to be the "spreader of joy" for her family whilst her brother Nick is being trained to take over when Dad passes on. When the day comes, Nick is left unable to cope. On Noelle's urging, he heads out into the world for a break... and decides to stay there. Who is going to save Christmas? I think you already know. So-so comedy that not even the normally reliable Anna Kendrick can save. Redeemed slightly by a surprising (for a mainstream US film) sub-plot involving a mother an daughter in a homeless shelter but otherwise not really worth your time. That said, Mme LeMarchand is a big Xmas movie fan and loved it - especially the baby reindeer.

Just as bad as it sounds. Poor acting, gruesome sfx, script that tries to include every horror trope imaginable.
Norphy Posted March 25, 2023 Posted March 25, 2023 Luck on Apple TV+ A girl tries to turn her luck around after meeting a black cat and finding a mysterious penny. Considering the team and the cast I was expecting more, to be honest. It was by no means bad and it kept my son entertained for its runtime but it also was just run of the mill. The animation was OK, very Pixar-ish and Simon Pegg was reliably Simon Pegg but the film just seemed derivative. Inside-Out had a similar aesthetic and is a lot better.

Pretty tense, but the ending could have done with being more ambiguous,
LeMarchand Posted March 30, 2023 Author Posted March 30, 2023 Mad Heidi (Rental most places) TRAILER NSFW In a totalitarian Switzerland, Heidi must fight back against the evil ruler. Title is a bit misleading as it's more the film that is mad than Heidi. This was a crowdfunded effort and whilst it's obviously not high budget it doesn't look any worse than your average low budget flick. Gratuitous t&a seems out of place in a modern production, but I guess it fits in with the grindhouse aesthetic, and whilst the film isn't good it does have some clever lines and the cinematography is better than some bigger budget movies. Really only good for a beery night in with the lads, though.
LeMarchand Posted April 2, 2023 Author Posted April 2, 2023 Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Disney+ or rental most other services) This was always going to be a tough one for Marvel, given the death of Chadwick Boseman. OTH, they do seem to have been given a fairly free pass due to this. Unfortunately it has turned out as a fairly missable Marvel film. YMMV, but I spent the film finding all sorts of faults, possibly the biggest being that this was more a Sub-Mariner film than a Black Panther one. If I was to list all my problems with the movie this would be a very long post (and would probably get me cancelled) but the other that I have to point out is the mid-credits scene that apparently reduced others to tears just made me wonder why the heck no-one had thought to reveal this years ago.
DalekSec Posted April 3, 2023 Posted April 3, 2023 Tetris (Apple TV) One of the first films in awhile that had me gripped through out, amazing storytelling, amazing soundtrack (currently have the album on repeat), Lots of laughs and retro gaming moments! A must watch for retro gamers. Only down side is a lot isn't true (see IMDB), but even that doesnt take away from the story.

There were a few laugh out loud moments for me, it referenced the source material fairly well and I liked that Peach wasn’t just a damsel in distress who needed rescuing, like she is in the games. It kept me and more importantly my six year old entertained for 92 minutes and that was the main thing.

Norphy Posted April 6, 2023 Posted April 6, 2023 Probably not, when you consider its intended audience. How old is your brother? It's not going to win any Oscars but it's a fun enough film. The fact that Rotten Tomatoes gives it an audience score of 96% right now is telling.
LeMarchand Posted April 6, 2023 Author Posted April 6, 2023 I'm Your Man (Ich bin dein Mensch) (Rakuten, but available to rent most places) Alma, a museum historian, is pressured into being part of a trial where she will live with a robotic man designed to adapt to her and become her perfect man. She hates this idea and cannot see how such a relationship could work... Had a free rental to use up, and this was on Mme LeMarchand's watchlist. Nothing to do with the Dan Stevens, I'm sure! The only other German things I've watched of late has been the start of DARK and 1899, neither of which are particularly cheerful, and this is possibly the dourest romcom that you'll ever see. That said, it does have funny bits as well as a few thought-provoking ideas. Possibly worth a watch when it's free somewhere but be warned: It ends on one of those "make up your own ending" notes.

It's coming to the end of it's run and down to two showings a day, but the screen was packed. I enjoyed it (it's John Wick, so whats not to like!), but felt it overly long and the fight scenes were getting a bit same-y. I did like The Warriors nod though 1
