Crimson Peak

 

Overwrought Gothic melodrama that most viewers will know exactly how it will play out from the start. (This may be deliberate). Beginning to hope someone else gets to "At The Mountains Of Madness" before G del T as I'm feeling he's not living up to his early potential.

The "Once" guy lightens up a bit for this 80s set musical/comedy. Not as comedic as the trailer suggests but worth a look in a low key way.

Touch Of Evil, FS remastered. Didn't love it. Camera work was great, but the plot felt old fashioned

 

To Kill A Mockingbird, didn't like it at first, but upon further discussion it improved.

A descendant of Red Riding Hood carries on the family business of... well, you guess. OK, I mainly watched this for Felicia Day and had low expectations. Let's just say my expectations were met.

High Rise: Yeah it was ok but not worth the hype. The speed of the descent into anarchy was too quick for my liking which spoiled it a bit for me.

Side effects: Hadn't heard of this but took a punt on recording it off the telly. Great twisty turny thriller with Jude Law (who wasn't at all unbearable like normal) and Catherine Zeta Jones (also not unbearable as usual). Worth a watch it you can get it.

I watched Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition at the weekend. I haven't seen the theatrical release. I thought it was ok - I have watched most of the other batman and superman films (usually years after they've been out) and it was better than the last superman film but probably not better than the last batman film i watched (which was the one before last)

 

That's a long film. The first third is a bit too long. It could be half an hour shorter and I don't think you'd really lose anything. The hour at the end might have been better being an hour and a half but maybe they didn't film enough of the good bit.

Honestly I think they'd have done better with two films than trying to fit it all into one.

There was a bit where batman might have been dreaming when some guy jumped out of a portal and rambled on about something but that might have actually happened

 

I'm not quite sure why Batman could do the rescue but Superman couldn't - Lex probably explained it during a bit I was being annoyed at him for ruining the film.

Batman seemed to take quite a long time saving her compared to someone who is "faster than a speeding bullet" might do

 

Lex was just awful - I don't think i've encountered a version of him that I find as irritating as that tw*t. Probably the way he was written but we maybe we should arrange for the actor to be arrested for something just in case they think of using him in anything else.

The guy being batman did it ok. I think i prefer pretty much everyone else who's ever played him but he was still alright

Superman could do with being a bit nicer, maybe smile a bit more but otherwise he's alright. Perhaps buy an ice cream for a small child or save a cat in a tree or something

Lois: They really need to get someone to write her an interesting script - they just don't seem that interested in her character. Secondly Lois needs to stop using their real names when they are in costume.

 

Turns out Superman and Batman live much nearer each other than I thought. It's surprising that during all of the various disasters that they've both faced that they don't help each other more. Superman certainly could nip to gotham, beat the daylights out of batman's enemies and get home in time to flood his bathroom with just a text message - surely batman wouldn't risk people's lives for the sake of forking out $10/month extra for 4g coverage or even just shouting "hey superman could you give me a hand for a minute" - would he let people die for the sake of a bit of pride or grumpiness?

 

My husband decided that the beginning wasn't realistic enough as well (this would be the spaceship thing being attacked by Superman in a comic book city scene being criticised for realism by my other half) - there apparently should have been more people panicking in the streets getting in batman's way.

He also didn't think batman could bulk up in a afternoon of weight training enough for it to be worth while. I assumed he was using some sort of drug to boost his muscles.

 

I don't think I've ever watched/read/encountered wonder woman before (i have obviously heard of her) - she is much tougher than I was expecting. Honestly we could just retire batman and let her protect gotham - seems much more capable and respectful of people's property. It's possible she lives in Belgium but I may have misinterpreted that

It's hilarious. Genuinely a very funny film with surprising religious/political overtones. It's full of foul language, stereotypes, sex jokes etc and i loved it. If you're religious, it's probably not for you as the entire premise is pretty much taking a jab at religion.

 

Also, to my surprise the trailers actually gave very little away.

Many people will think highly rated films are over rated, that's just statistics

 

But DD was one of those films that (on release) everyone was gushing over and that if you didn't like it you weren't intelligent enough to "get it". It was starting to look like the tide was turning, but if new (and presumably unhyped) viewers like @Galway are still raving about it I'm guessing that world isn't ready for that yet. :(

Agree about the trailers, but not so much about the film. I found it a bit "flat", but will concede that as I had to go on my own (Mme LeMarchand couldn't even listen to the trailer and most of my friends don't "do" cinema) and was one of only about a dozen people in a large screen that it probably wasn't the best way to watch it.

 

What a great film, I seam to be on a roll.

Enjoyed this one and would recommend it if you like that sort of comedy, though not one to rush out to see. Mme LeMarchand also enjoyed it but felt that the ladies were basically acting like blokes for the main part.Was the sole male in the cinema...

Yes it's got laugh-out-loud moments, but it's essentially a load of cheap laughs strung together with a fairly corny love story. A classic Seth Rogan film if ever there was one.

 

I was surprised it had a 15 rating, given it's very strong swearing, drug use and 'sex' scenes

Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse

 

Trailer probably NSFW.

 

 

This appealed to my inner 14 year old. A fun post pub kind of film if that sort of humour appeals. Best bits: the deliberately fake zombie cat and a scene where the boys have to vault a fence that the cocktail waitress more or less steps over (she has incredibly long legs!).

Finally saw Batman v Superman (the three hour ultimate edition. THREE HOURS. Did not need to be three hours). Wasn't as bad as I was expecting, mostly because I was expecting it to be atrocious, but instead it was mostly just... meh.

 

Batman killing people and branding people was just... no. That's the Punisher you're thinking of, not Batman. Stop it. It was weird seeing Ben Affleck as Batman, and I didn't like it, but that turned out to be much less offensive than the sudden shift to Murderman.

 

But the thing I keep getting stuck on--the really stupid part--is Lex Luthor. Not just the godawful annoying performance, but his motivation. Why was he doing all this? What was his driving force? As best I can make out from his Big Bad speech, it was because he was an atheist, which, er. Right. Thanks for that. "God is either all powerful, in which case he is not all good, or he is all good, in which case he is not all powerful." That logic might work for God and his ascribed powers of omniscience and omnipotence, but Superman is quite clearly not all powerful, as witnessed by the times he gets beat up a lot, or outsmarted. So we know this answer. So maybe you don't need to go through all this ridiculous palaver just to find that out, y'know?

 

Also lol @ a jar of human p155 being a major plot point. Top writing, that.
