Anti Virus For School / College

Hi All

 

I have Recently inherited the IT Department at the college I work at and have been asked to source an anti virus for the computers as we are currently unprotected. As this is an area I am an totally unfamiliar with I was wondering if anyone knows of any AV solutions designed for schools and colleges.

First of all, contact your LEA. You may have a license to run an Antivirus product through them. When I worked for a Bedfordshire school, we had a McAfee license through them for example. When I worked for one in Milton Keynes, we ran SOPHOS through them.

 

If your school has an EES license, they are probably entitled to run Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection (SCEP) on their PCs but managing this without SCCM can be a challenge.

 

Otherwise, look to the usual vendors. ESET (NOD32), Kaspersky, Vipre and F-Secure are all good. I'd avoid Symantec, my experiences with their product have not been good.

My choices would be as follows:

 

1) whatever your LEA has a licence to run as it'll be cheap/free.

2) MS Forefront Endpoint, because it might be included with you ms licensing.

3) ESET because it's easy to work with and very effective, but it isn't super cheap.

Well, lets put it this way. If we hadn't had been given it for free in MK, I would have put pressure on them to change it for something else.

Strongly recommend Kaspersky and also recommend you avoid Sophos. We had Sophos for a year and constantly had users bring their virus infected machines into us. Swapped to Kaspersky and we haven't had a laptop go down due to malware for almost 18 months now.

Blimey. I sincerely hope the reason you took over was because the last person was sacked for that level of negligence! Again, check your microsoft licensing; if you're on EES or similar subscription licensing you'll be legible for Forefront/SCEP for nothing.

I actually get on alright with Sophos in the one school I have it on but it does get a bad rep for fairly good reason!

I've used Sophos at my current school and previous school and never had a problem with it... Pricing's competitive, it's been reliable and robust...

 

Always been happy to recommend it...

I use Sophos here, and have had no problems so far 'touchwood'

I know alot of people don't like Symantec, but I use it here and it works great. Very happy with it.

I don't think he was advocating the free, home use version! Both have a proper education solution that is apparently well-loved in the USA particularly.

We use ESET and love it but previously we had Sophos and I got on fine with that too
