Free AV

Got a friend who has McAfee on his Windows 8 laptop, its due to expire so told him not to pay for it but what free ones are out there for Windows 8? I'm not a 8 user so not sure if security essentials will work on it.

 

Advise please. Failing MSE what other free ones are out there?

I use avast at home on windows 8.1 and have done for a few years, its free you have to re-register each year (email address). It also pops up sale offers to upgrade every now and then.

 

It's probably not the best, but what can you expect for free, and it does catch quite a few emails with virus / phishing attachments. I'm also fairly careful what sites I visit and software i install.

I've used Avast before but never had to register before, bit put off by doing that. Cheers, might look at it again.

for anti virus use AVG or avast

 

for malware use malwarebytes <-- will save your life one day.

Thanks Avira is one I've looked at recently. Said no to AVG as it got quite bulky but its similar answers to what I've thought of already.

 

What is the Windows Defender (MSE) like that is built in?

I agree, Defender is just fine as my sole anti-virus solution, however, I do like to bolster security by installing either Microsoft EMET:
