This has worked for my school.

However, sadly it's yet another unacceptable interruption to services by SWGfL as our ISP. Good staff there for sure but it's us folk at the school chalk face who get the grief when things like this happen.

Additionally, we are currently having LAN cabling work going on so that was our first point of trouble shooting it was by chance that I logged a call with SWGfL and discovered the problem lay with them.

It would have bee flipping helpful to say the least if they e-mailed their Schools to explain what was going on.

Rant over!

I'm inside SWGfL, these seem to work:

Google

Google

Google

Google

Google

...but not if the request includes the domain name in the header. Access one of these IPs directly and it's fine. Don't bother trying to config your DNS to point to one of these addresses, already tried, it doesn't work! But this might be an acceptable temporary link for your users.

Still dead for us here on the standard SWGfL proxy, luckily our internal proxies just happen to be going out to the Internet through an upstream proxy that isn't affected.

On the SWGfL site today:

Upcoming Maintenance 10/09/14 - We have tested a workaround last night on a single proxy server that has restored connection to Google services for that server. We will now begin to roll this out to the remainder of the SWGfL proxy servers.

It's all over the shop at my place, no google, proxies are up and down like an 'ores drawers and random stuff keeps timing out. Pretty annoyed tbh and looking to change.

Updated from Master Call: 4669448 - Engineers are now working on rolling out the change to the remaining affected proxies in a staged fashion throughout today. We anticipate the work to be completed by mid-afternoon today

They obviously take their customers seriously allowing this to go on for days!!!!

Once again shocking service from this truly awful service provider. Already getting quotes from others. Frankly I've had enough of this lot!

Whoa, a bit OTT maybe. Let's be honest it's not SWGfL is it, it's RM...

Their whole mantra is about getting the best service for schools. SWGfL chose to get into bed with RM.

Unfortunately SWGFL have really dropped the ball with this one.

We've chosen to stay with them for a variety of reasons, but things like this really aren't helping their cause.

And as for RM, well, I'd better not say what I think of them. Suffice it to say they will never set foot in my school again as long as I am ICT Manager.

SWGfL tell me they now have it sorted. Yippee!

That said I feel they have big questions to answer on what happened. It's us folk at the chalk face who have had to deal with pretty immense flack over this utter debacle.

Needs a statement from SWGfL I feel?

It would be nice wouldn't it. I think it's the least they need to do TBH.

SWGfL has removed it from their news page on the website.

So I'm guessing, YOU DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING AND THIS NEVER HAPPENED

The ESI site has this on the front page "Engineers have now completed re-routing Google traffic on the proxy servers. Google services are working on proxy.swgfl.org.uk, Smartcache and Staff proxies. We are still experiencing issues with Transparent proxy which we continue to investigate. Engineers continue to liaise with Google to identify a permanent resolution."

Ah, haven't been in there this morning. It was on their public news feed yesterday.

That said, I'm now having no end of trouble with sites that use "http://ajax.googleapis.com/" - including this one - same behaviour as the google searches.

Same here. And fonts.googleapis.com

Happy to say that google.com is at last loading OK correctly through the standard proxy...just a shame about a whole stack of other Google services. JQuery on our school website for one (don't ask, not my doing!).

Please accept our sincere apologies for the disruption that issues over the past few of days have caused for the staff and students at your school, we take any interruption to our services extremely seriously.

There has been an issue with access to Google services following unexpected changes that Google made towards the end of last week. We are continuing to work with the Google Network Surveillance team to resolve this permanently.

In the interim we have deployed a workaround to restore web access to Google Services. Access to Google.com and Google.co.uk has been restored.

Users are reporting issues with accessing some Google services such as fonts, YouTube and APIs.

Google.com and google.co.uk are unaffected.

ETA for fix is 12pm

Further updates will be provided via text and online at ESI South West Grid for Learning Trust and on the SWGfL website SWGfL - Schools Internet Service
