localzuk Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 Last night I finished playing Wolfenstein: New World Order (well, finished the storyline). A few things struck me about it, namely the superb storyline, the extended "death scenes" when you die during one of the more cutscene type minigame sections, and the overall feel of the game. I was truly impressed that the game made me feel attached to the character I was playing, as he had a detailed backstory, a love interest, and a potential future should he succeed in his mission. It contrasted heavily with other FPS games which focus entirely on the "point and shoot" of it all and focus on multiplayer at the expense of singleplayer. It hasn't been the only game to make me think "this would make a great movie" either, Medal of Honor was another, and the Fallout 3/Fallout New Vegas games would make a great TV series. Does anyone else have any games which strike them as having great storylines?
featured_spectre Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 If you like comicbooks, Injustice: Gods among us has a great story line
korifugi Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 The Last of Us is also a beautiful, heartwrenching story where you really get to know the characters. The newest reboot of Tomb Raider, too - Lara's progression from scared and hesitant to tough as nails is brilliant, even if there doesn't feel that there is enough of the game. For all it's faults, Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter was also a fantastic storyline. Ryu's determination to get Nina to the surface - even to the cost of himself is just beautiful. If you want plot though - Planescape: Torment is massively convoluted but absolutely mindblowing.
JJonas Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 (edited) This.... better than the second generation of films in my opinion and you can now play it on IOS Edited July 25, 2014 by JJonas
Grey-gear Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 Mass Effect 1 had a great storyline and some great side stories. Also Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2.

sonofsanta Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 I'm going to go with Mass Effect as my favourite; ME1 had a great plotline, full of twists and reveals and lines like "You exist because we allow it; you will end because we demand it." ME2 had a wonderful cast, and a great plot structure to develop them, even if the actual main plot is thin on the ground. ME3 is perhaps the weakest, but gets a carry because you're already so invested. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is also a great story game, a sci-fi retelling of Monkey, with great characters (helped by having Andy Serkis as the main character). But my favourite story-game of all time is Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, because of the way the story and the game are tied so intimately. Either without the other would be a passing, flighty thing, but the way they're intertwined is so powerful and emotional it will - genuinely - reduce you to tears. Probably more than once. It's a few quid, it takes three hours to play, sit down and do it in one sitting with a bottle of wine/whiskey and be glad such remarkable people exist to create these wonderful things.
JJonas Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 I hated the control system on Brothers, but I might have to give it another go following that recommendation
ICTDirect_Dave Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 (edited) Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 were some of the best written games I've encountered. Then there's the sheer quality of the writing in the Legacy of Kain games, it's such a shame they've reduced the world down to a multiplayer deathmatch game And of course Final Fantasy VII. Epic story, brilliant characters, awesome everything! Edited July 25, 2014 by ICTDirect_Dave I can't spell Republic
LeMarchand Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 +1 Brothers. I enjoyed Quantum Gate's story (the game play sucked, though).
DMcGuigan Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 My main two have already been mentioned, those being Kingdom Hearts and Enslaved The only other one that springs to mind is Persona 4 Golden on Vita, you think it's all over then you find out if you change 3 decisions you get an extra 10-20 hours of gameplay and 2 different endings. I've put about 100 hours into P4G already, just started my second run through it, definitely the best story I've played in a while.
d0pefish Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 The Walking Dead - Telltale version, not Survival Instinct
sonofsanta Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 I hated the control system on Brothers, but I might have to give it another go following that recommendation The controls are a bit weird, but they're essential to the way the story works later on. The game never gets particularly challenging, so you'll not get stuck repeating a bit because of their oddness.
foofighterjim Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 +1 for Final Fantasy VII; the most epic game I have ever played back when telling the story actually mattered.
arwen Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 Great story lines is what I normally go for in games. But then I do prefer RPGs to FPS. Dragon Age, Assassins Creed 2 and 3 and The Walking Dead are some recent ones that I have loved. FF7 is my all time favourite though :-)
Grey-gear Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 +1 for FF7 as well, first game I ever completed everything in (multiple times) +1 for Dragon age (can't went for the next installment of that) Fire emerld awakening was really good as well.
sonofsanta Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 (edited) I see your Final Fantasies and I raise you Skies of Arcadia God rest the Dreamcast. Oh, and The Witcher games. 1 is a bit creaky gameplay wise now, but the setting and the world are incredible. Witcher 3 is the only game I'm looking forward to right now, tbh. CamelMan Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 For me its ones that finish and it either hits you with a "WTF!" or you just wish there was more (in a good way): Max Payne 2 Dragon Age 1 (didnt get on with #2) BioShock TES Morrowind Oblivion Metro 2033 Stalker Fallout (1,2, 3 & Vegas) I especially like ones with alternative or secret endings (wont say which ones in case of spoilers!)
JJonas Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 I like the ones with twist endings, we have mentioned a few already
ICTDirect_Dave Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 Just to come back to the Legacy of Kain series for a second. There's extensive time travel involved. How many games with great stories are there that regularly cross their own timelines back and forth from game to game?
SYNACK Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 Bioshock as above and the first Deadspace were great
synaesthesia Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 Indeed, Bioshock and Wolfenstein New Order both stick out for me. I've played the latter through 4 times now and it still impresses me.
truebluesteve Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 All of the Fallout Episodes along with Skyrim - in fact Bethesda are pretty good at the open world immersive game genre. Another favourite of mine where they really managed to capture the time the game was set in was GTA Vice City. It was a real piece of the 1980s and that whole Miami Vice thing
