I've just heard there's one opening here. I've looked at their website and their products look interesting but are they good value?

They are a bloody bargain! The company was setup by the former Tesco CEO, he knows how to run a business! Random fact, he was best man at a wedding I went to a few years back and I had a nice chat with him about football, with the then director of Arsenal.

They're a cheap Woolworths, or a pound shop with a less restrictive price model - dirt cheap, random stock, variable quality, but generally worth a look as you can get some decent stuff for a song. They are to Wilkos as Heron is to Tesco, in a way.

I don't think it was set up by the former Tesco CEO - but he is on the board now.

 

My Mum rates them for bargains - don't think we've got one down here

They were set up in 1978, so it depends which Tesco CEO we are talking about, I guess!

 

They look like a cross between Robert Dyas and Pound Shop.

I've noticed this, too. Also a selection of the grub is obviously intended for European markets (this does mean you see some flavours that we don't get).

 

Non-food tends to be a bit like the next step down from TK Maxx: they seem to buy end of lines and cheap tat, so the stock is always changing. There are bargains to be had, but last time I visited most of the leads/connectors I looked at weren't as cheap as Amazon. B & M may pay some tax, though.

They are a good shop for a bargain, provided you dont mind what you buy. I've bought some car towing rope, hammock string, tarps etc, all been great, can't fault them. Other stuff, can openers, cutlery etc, all poor.

They do a decent range of Alcoholic drinks I've found, with decent offers on the more unusual drinks. (Crabbies alcoholic cloudy lemonade, for example).

Oh yeah, their real ale selection is good value and has some odd beers you've not heard of, certainly worth a look for that. And sweeties/chocolate biscuits you remember from your childhood.

If you're offered the chance to buy food/drink past it's best before date, don't worry about it BBE dates are a farce and mean sweet FA really. Use by dates are usually on things that go bad quickly like milk, meats etc and i'd be wary of those ones.

We buy stuff past BBE from Approved foods all the time, brilliant service and brilliant stuff never had a problem.

 

Bought a lovely caramel tart thing from Tesco reduced from £4 to 40p and kept eating it for 3 days past its use by date, I haven't dropped dead yet
