Hi Guys,

I have been asked to look into remote shut down software to shut down the computer suites at night and start them up again in the morning.

Is there anything good and FREE (budget is stretched as it is!) that you guys use and could recommend?

Cheers,

You could write your own shutdown as a batch file, run it as a scheduled task on a server. Somewhat the same for booting them up, although you will need to resort to powershell (or other high level language) to send the magic packet. The most difficult thing is maintaining the list of PC names and MAC addresses. You could do that by getting the logon script to deposit that info somewhere.

We used to use QLShutdown (QwertyLabs) before we made use of the Power Management options from within the Impero suite (which we purchased to do other things - the power management was just a nice feature that was included)

QLShutdown isn't free, about $200 I think for the single PC version with unlimited clients. It worked great for the 2 years or so I had it in place.

Here's a link: Qwertylab - Software for network administration and PC remote control

We just use ancient batch files - scripts based on Gammadyne Wol to wake up and PSShutdown to switch off. Seems to work. AB Tutor is brilliant, though so far I haven't had much luck using it for WOL for some reason. We use Angry IP to harvest the Mac addresses. Edited by BJG

@TechSupp we have AB Tutor here, might be worth a shout looking at that, cheers. Hadn't thought of that!

From memory you need to add machines to a group in ab tutor so it 'remembers' the machines mac address otherwise it just scans for currently switched on clients.

At one of my schools I just created a GPO to add a scheduled task to each computer to shutdown at 7PM. This seems to work fine and if I add any new computers to the domain it will pull the policy down so no list of computers to maintain. I don't have them set to turn back on in the morning the first person to use the PC does that.

Just been playing with the EMCO demo and it looks great actually. Definitely on the shopping list. (I'm thinking of WOLing the whole school at about 6.00am to get any updates out the way.) Edited by BJG
