A lot of schools in Birmingham are in the press as of late for the wrong reasons. It's a very sad state of affairs, especially for all the kids it affects. The press don't talk enough about the good things happening in schools I find!

On one side I think this kind of punishment isn't a bad idea but then again I would be just as angry if it was my kids that suffered this.

What I don't like to read is the teacher immediately regretted doing this: was this immediately after taping her mouth, immediately after 15 minutes had gone by or immediately when the Head Teacher/Parent was involved.

Personally I think the Teacher should be suspended, the amount of damages I see caused by Students to the IT equipment is shocking. I wouldn't just tape their hands together so they couldn't brake the keyboards.. I would expect to be suspended pretty quickly. A lot of bad examples lately in regards to the education system, you would think people would watch the news.

Without condoning anyone's actions, this wasn't a child being gaffer taped to a chair in a Gestapo style interrogation or gagging. This is sellotape, that wouldn't stick to anyone's lips if you tried. Clearly it was just a point being made, not a physical silencing attempt. (Of course I haven't read too much into it, I'm assuming this young person hadn't had half a roll of the stuff round and round the face).

Those comments are hilarious. Had to stop reading them as I was tempted to sign up. Thats never a good thing to do...

Couldn't agree more, strange thing is though if she was their daughter they would react the same way. My mother would comment the same thing that maybe she should behave but if that was me or my sisters.....

Not condoning the act as such, but when the father is saying:

You cannot lay a finger on children.

I wonder if that's why she wouldn't shut up... :getmecoat:

And my old Skl Backlash after school installs CCTV in pupils' toilets (From Echo)

If that would have happened in my class im pretty sure the teacher would be on the floor I guess its all about the area :).

*After Re-Reading this I mean I wouldn't be putting them on the floor heck I wouldn't kill a fly but im pretty sure most of the hormonal raging people in my class would and have.

I had my mouth selotaped shut at primary school and one of my friends was put in a little waste paper bin (up to her shins), because she kept producing rubbish or some other reason. My parents thought it was funny and I probably deserved it for not shutting up! This happened int he early 1990s so that logn ago really.

The teacher that did it didn't get in trouble and when i look back at my time at primary school he was also one of my favourite teachers.

Parents seem to think there chidlren never misbehave at school, always do what they are told, and are absolute angels. Parents complain when a student is given an after school detention because it is inconvenient for them. Schools are slowly getting softer and softer because there is no longer deterrents, as parents only take their little angels side, and students are simply taking advantage of it

Haha, the picture of her and her dad make it look like she's undergone some awful trauma.

There's every chance in the world that her, the teacher and the rest of the class were having a giggle about it. I can't imagine anyone sellotaping someone's mouth or having their mouth selotaped in these circumstances in a serious fashion.

This happened to me, and several class mates in the early to mid 1990s.

Everyone saw it as a bit of a laugh. Kids, parents, teachers. Everyone is so touchy these days.

As much as I am 150% behind making sure that children are safe and not in any way being mistreated, I do think things have gone ridiculously the other way.
