Firstly, i'm unsure if this is in the right section so apologies if it is not!

We are soon moving over to SIMS MIS system and our deputy head is concerned about confidential information showing up on the smartboard when a member of staff launches SIMS to take their register (supposedly student issues and such show up on the front page of it)

We are currently using a mirrored display on all of our smart boards (I have recommenced using a extended display but they don't like it.) The only other option we have that I can think of is that some of our smartboards have a freeze screen function - but the problem with that, is that not all of our projectors provide that function.

What do you guys do to get around this?

There is no technological solution to this, Tell deputy head they can either endorse extended desktop and arrange training and support or arrange training and support on how to use a projector ( freeze/pause/blank button or not turning it on until the lesson is ready to start.

Technical solutions to what is essentially a non-technical problem rarely work well. I think the simplest thing to do is to train your staff not to turn the projector on until after they've finished taking the register.

Just spoke to the deputy head about this, he seems to agree that it is down will be down to the staff to make sure their board is of. Also the option for an extended display is still available to staff who want it.

Thanks for the help/replies,

Training, training, training. And fear.

It might be better to have a policy of not having any sensitive information on the Homescreen. Otherwise it is getting the information out to staff that they should blank or freeze their projectors when opening or using SIMS. Check the projector specs for those that don't have the function. We found we had a batch of projectors that just needed different remotes and did have the freeze function.

The fear comes from letting them know the consequences of being slack. & then getting SLT to repeat the consequences. & then distributing the disciplinary policy.

Somethings aren't a technological issue or fix, they are down to people doing things and realising the consequences.

Let me know how you get on with this.

were putting in a new MIS for sept, and a good proportion of our lot struggle (yes really) with the whole 'connect to a projector' menu in win 7. Any helpful hints welcome.

+1 for getting the teachers to use extended desktops - if you give them a twin monitor system. The secondary monitor displays the output of the projector so its just a case of drag & drop stuff onto the second screen. Extended screens is pretty hopeless with just one monitor though.

Ive done most of our rooms here and the majority of the staff have been delighted with the additional flexibility.

I used cast off 17" monitors from our last refit for the secondary screens so it was done at minimal cost, I just had to buy some vga splitters - mainly passive y-splitters although I did find some projectors that didnt like the voltage drop and I now use usb powered splitters.

There are a few technophobe luddites holding out but the last few rooms will be done over this summer with training put in place for those that believe they cant cope.
