When I was working in a school ( 4 years ago almost ) I once did a Aruba setup with lots of help but I've been hearing quite a bit on the Ruckas systems. Has anyone implemented one of these and if so - how easy was it. I'm only looking at 3 / 4 Access points max.

IrritableTech Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 If you're looking for a small managed system with only a few bells and whistles there are cheaper options (take a look at ubiquiti), but if you've got the money (and are happy to pay maintenance) ruckus is great kit - very easy to set up. 1

I was massively sceptical of people telling me how reliable ruckus was before using it but it's one of those things that I have found to just work 1

The setup takes 20 mins max! 1

I think most of the main managed WiFi vendors are more or less all plug and play now. I think if it is taking you longer than 20 mins you must be doing something above and beyond with it. Chris
jdell Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 You should look at a Xirrus, solution no need to a controller as its on the unit, completely scaleable with out replacing controllers etc like Meru/Meraki and Ruckus and the density is so much better on a cost per unit basis. We run 85 Xirrus arrays with 350 Radios in them and have covered a large campus with 100% high density and my required management is nothing. Great solution, give it a look before committing to another solution.
robjduk Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 We looked at Xirrus and if I were in charge at the time we may have very well gone with them (but glad we have Ruckus). To me instead of Ruckus's approach of less radios but better detection, the Xirrus solution just bombarded its AP's with radios. The main mistake I think they made is during their presentation they told us how the US military had just bought loads of Xirrus APs.... we were quite impressed until later in the demo the guy let slip that a lot of their higher ups were ex US military so basically just got contracts from their friends in my opinion.

I don't think you will find the Ruckus a problem compared to the old Aruba Multiple SSID's on different VLANS, pretty good monitoring, guest portal that non-IT people can use to issue guest passes AND A DECENT GUI Edited May 20, 2014 by Davit2005
pantscat Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 I got my Ruckus system (54 APs) up and running in a day... this was for 3 of us to run around and wall mount them and configure the system. This included multiple VLANs, guest access and 802.1x.
