I remember when....

 

Doom came out. My job suffered. My marriage suffered. I worked it out once and I think I must have spent about 6 months of my life playing it altogether. I even bought a new PC so I could play it at a decent frame rate.

Although I remember wolfenstein 3D - same engine but rather risqué due to whole Nazi thing it had going on.

Ah yes - Doom was great! Mind you as per other poster I remember playing Wolfenstein 3D and being amazed! Played that for ages!!

Couldn't play Wolfenstien without wretching. Made a map fo Doom of my old workplace. A psychologist would've found it VERY interesting

I've got Doom working great on my PDA - if you still have the original PAK files it works a treat - there is a pay version out there which is a bit of a con, but with a little hunting around you can get another ver which will run and it you have the original disks then the levels are all there to enjoy...

 

Just waiting now for Duke Nukem 3D to be launched...

Also, I was thinking of writing a DarkBasic Doomish style game myself - thing is I don't think I'll ever get time....

If we're going down the road of old computer games, does anyone else remember a hediously difficult game called spindizzy?? It was one of the most playable games I remember from the 80's, the gameplay was unlike anything else available at the time, never seen anything quite like it since either.

I also remember a game called sorcery which had some of the best graphics of it's time, that was also very difficult! I liked games that were a challenge.

I remember doom, duke nukem, paperboy and boulderdash on the amstrad CPC.

 

Although, my most recent reason for not doing any work is battlefield 2

Talking of green screens, I remember buying a green plastic sheet to stick over the TV for my ZX81 - I got it from WH Smiths. It used to peel at the corners....sticky tape was the answer there, and the best thing to cool down the ZX80 / ZX81 was a carton of milk from the fridge. The heat zinks from the main boards were crap. They used to try and dispatch the heat from the interface at the rear but never did a good job. Rotating a few milk cartons worked wonders....[ Plus I built a wooden unit to keep the ZX81 in so the 16K Ram pack did not fall off the back as that was another problem because of the heat ]

You spent ages fiddling with the tone, volume, etc, and waiting for a game to load from tape on a ZX81 (or Acorn Electron) and then it failing

 

Or buying Input magazine, spending ages typing in the programmes every week, and then having to wait for the following weeks errata to fix the typos!!

 

Then there was the Amiga, and Outrun or supercars II - the latter a favourite to start the Friday night drinking off to!

 

I could go on!!!!!
