Password Protect Printers for students

Anyone know of anyway you can password protect a printer so that students cant just print whatever they please? ie: The teacher can come over and type a password or key to allow use of the printer?

 

I work at an alternative school and some of the 6th grades like to print non school related material. I could just delete the printer off of the laptops but the teacher wants the ability to print word files and what not.

 

We use windows 7 with HP printers.

 

Any feedback would be helpful.

You can do this with PaperCut, you can either restrict the users releasing the jobs unless staff member logs in or you can put a script on a printer which a predefined code/password that has to be typed and then it will print the jobs.

You would need an extra bit of software I would imagine. Ab tutor can block printers amongst other things from a teachers console.

It depends on how savvy the students are. There are a few ways to do this without extra software (sort of), not a password per se.

 

Deploy your printers to the users not the computer via GPP.

if the printers are share vs direct IP set permissions on the print server.

If they are direct IP I would consider changing that model and restrict printing from the print server IP only, then apply said permissions.

Thanks for all your info. I may pass along the info about PaperCut. They are pretty much all just direct IP and a few of the students know about to add the printers. Unfortunately I dont really run the show completely. I have my building to manage but anything that is bought or implemented needs department approval at the district level.

 

I will see if I can come up with something. Sometimes I just want to say "Have consequences if the students abuse the equipment!" lol

 

We are a huge district (30+ buildings) and no real standard lol Got to love it.

This should be fairly easy to solve no additional cost....

 

Check if the printer supports any sort of acl. We have a hp 2025 (cheap, cost around $200) that we can specify what ips can print to it. Password protect the settings page. Set ips to the print server. Set permissions on the printer object to only allow teachers. Done.

If you go the paper cut route you’ll need to move to the shared model, otherwise paper cut cannot control the jobs.

I can’t speak about it too much because we do not have it yet. We are looking at it to help manage printing costs.

Finance has signed off on it I’m just waiting on implementation. My district is 1/10^th your size and I’d consider paper cut for cost management alone.

The first thing you should do is talk to district and standardize on the shared model. Direct IP cannot be managed with permissions or paper cut.

Yes....I used PaperCut for this similar purpose as well....worked quite nicely
