Ok guys. Seriously, who would be up for this if I organised it?

 

Not that I can make it this year but an extended event makes the trip much more palatable.

Hi,

 

Too late for this year i guess but would it be possible to host the event somewhere central i.e. Birmingham or something so most people can make it as its central sort of area and rail, road and other connections are pretty good.

Preston is pretty central for the UK - when you consider the people who come from northern Scotland, or people who might come from Northern Ireland etc...

Not to mention that it's on a main line train route & right next to the M6 :)

When it comes to hosting events 'elsewhere' we do have issues when it comes to planning. With the venues in Preston I can give the venue a list of requests, pop down and ensure they have been implented and ensure everthing will be tikkety-boo before the main event.

This year we are looking to host other events, but given our requirements for power, internet, wireless and other technical provisions it is a lot to ask of some venues to ensure that they can actually meet these demands without our direct oversight.

Having new conf locations 200 miles from our base is going to be a challenge.

Right, we should be getting the registration for the conf up today, but please fill out the poll to give us an idea of numbers as we do need to ensure that we fill a minimum amount of slots otherwiese it's going to put future confs in jepardy as there is a considerable financial outlay for these events as, as those who have attended in the past can attest, we do lay on quite a bit of hospitality!

 

Next! As the idea of a proper 'geek-up' has lodged in my brain since it's suggestion some points come to mind:

 

 

  1. It would have to be a 'whole' weekend event i.e. Friday - Sunday
  2. Would you want it to be camping or hotel based (hotel is sooooo much easier to organise)
  3. There would be a cost as there is no way we could cover everything and even the little things (if camping) such as toilets, rubbish collection, electrics, first aid and decent internet access would begin to run into quite an amount of money
  4. What would you want the event to consist of? Speakers, activites, fun stuff or a more casual 'bring a laptop and socilaise' affair? With perhaps some Minecraft.

 

 

Now, back to the EDIT 2014 and ISTE organisation..........

Fair enough, it makes sense :)

 

Only comment I'd have to that is maybe we could have a certain amount of spaces for camping, with the rest needing to hotel it (which some may prefer to do anyway of course).

 

A mish-mash of all the potential activities you've listed there sounds good!

The way I imagine it, is the conference with camping, and extra festivities. Holding it on a weekend will probably encourage more people to come, as there's no conflict with work, and a small charge for a good party is no big thing. This way, us suppliers could get involved, with our usual tables, plus whatever fun and festive activities we could come up with to make it a little different.

 

You already said the Rugby club does caming ;)

Why was drinking not mentioned? Is edugeek broken?

 

I was going to mention the excess number of beers, late night propping up of the bar, late night trips to 'local clubs' coming back in the early hours and multiple failed attempts to awaken a slumbering Scotsman before midday on Friday but wasn't sure if we were supposed to. ;)

I shall be coming up to catch up with everyone, and do some socializing! :-) as i missed BETT this year [first time for like ever!] so! see you all there and look forward to catching up with you.

I think that camping would be a good idea. Perhaps we could get a tent hire company in to do tents for those who do not have one. I would like one of those big Bell tents but with the wooden beams.

For those coming the day before and the day after I have worked out train fares to/from London:

 

Euston [EUS], Preston Lancs [PRE], Crewe [CRE]

 

OUTBOUND Wed 28 May

10:43 EUS - PRE (3hrs) @ £20

12:30 EUS - PRE (2hrs) @ £20

 

RETURN Fri 30 May

13:17 PRE - EUS (3hrs) @ £38

17:58 PRE - EUS (2hrs) @ £29

18:17 PRE - EUS (3hrs change @ CRE) @ £20

 

Tickets are Advance Fares for specific trains and correct at time of posting. Check with National Rail before you travel at National Rail Enquiries - Official source for UK train times and timetables

 

Personally I think 12:30 up and 13:17 back are the best bet. Waiting until the evening to get back from Preston will sink that extra tenner into the shops instead of getting home. :p
