Shadow_Walker Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Basically the school want the children to be able to work on the iPads and then save the work that they do on the iPad back to our server. Does anyone know any way this can be achieved? The only option that we can come up with so far is a piece of software called foldr but the starting price for that is £3000 a year which is a bit much at the moment.

I have tried the filebrowser app however i found that due to restrictions on our server it couldn't get to the student profiles and only allowed us to view the shared drive
Jasbo Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Filebrowser works okay for a cheap solution on iPads, I use it at work There's some WebDAV guides on edugeek to roll your own Foldr is a very good solution IMHO and gives you a lot more than just write back for tablets. We have 1k kids and the price quoted was 2k yr 1 and £900 year two +, which for a supported remote file access service from anywhere with browser/app/WebDAV support I thought was okay tbh. My 2 cents
seawolf Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Acronis Access (previously MobilEcho) allows you to open and save any files to/from the server as well as copy/paste or move files. You can also create new folders and sync entire folders or shares to your iPad. MS Office docs can also be created and edited. Integrates with Sharepoint servers as well. Costs $5,000 per year here for a site license (unlimited file servers and users). Other options are Foldr or School eLockers. 1

Only a little less than £300 a year and it lets the staff and pupils save to their home folders! It doesn't allow you to pull the files back from the server but we only have 1 movie app that seems like it would support this anyway. Thumbs up from me!

AirCatch looks intriguing and would appear to be a possible solution for shared (trolley) iPads. It's obvious that an email account has to be setup on the iPad for it to work, so does this email account allow sending of an email to any email address, or only those configured in the AirWatch server? If it only allows emails to the addresses specified in the server, then this would be a brilliant solution as it would prevent students sending spam (or bullying) emails to one another or people outside of the school.

Should work fine with more or less any setup... those must be some very oddball restrictions.

Hope that helps. Thanks for the follow-up. Just to clarify, I would think that AirCatch would need to use the Mail app for sending to the "email addresses", is that correct? If not, then that is brilliant and its exactly what we need for our shared iPad trolleys. If it does create an email account in the Mail app, is it possible for a student to open that up and send an email to a different address than the AirCatch server, or does it handle that by being the SMTP server itself and whitelisting the addresses the email account can send to that way.

No it does not, Foldr works with your existing permissions and ACL shares on your Windows server, you can not only send files to your home directory but download files from it as well, uses the existing AD user name and password, requires a VM to work but installs in about 2 clicks. Foldr does so much more though, create QR codes of files the teacher wants to send to students, annotate PDF files and save back so that teachers can mark student work. disco_samurai Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 +1 recommendation from me for Foldr, its amazingly easy to setup and can cope with most of the weird and wonderful ways different apps try to save things. I can honestly say the iPad trial at my school would probably have died on its arse without Foldr, the teachers love it. Mike Turner at Minnow is a really decent guy as well, he was happy to extend my trial whilst we made a final decision on it. Neal 1
