Michael Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Maybe - but it was only yesterday 10.04.2014 a large number of schools were still experiencing problems. The firewall was installed December 2013. It's not really surprising why people (quite rightly) are becoming very agitated with Link2ICT. The lease line offers us a high uptime of 99.9%, however BGfL as the service provider are currently less than satisfactory. The communication is poor and no one unfortunately can explain what's happening, other than they're communicating with CheckPoint. That's great, but it doesn't help schools in the short term, typically taking weeks to investigate the logs it generates. I'm just very conscious of the fact that the event will be used to promote 'what's coming down the line', rather than focusing on what lessons could be learnt from the past to the current day. You also need to consider the bigger picture - every school's different and every school's got different requirements. That's the way it should be, yet it's still one big system at the core managing it all. It doesn't necessarily make logical sense to do things this way any more and many schools (again in their own right), want full ownership and control, yet Link2ICT don't necessarily (out of choice) want to offer it. A conflict of interest on the cards? Yes potentially, but this is why Link2ICT should give schools that choice. 1
hawc Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 I know I am not from Birmingham and so should not be sticking my nose in, but I have a suggestion. Why don't Link2ICT set up a public open blog that they can explain issues and downtimes on. Down here in Hertfordshire, our LEA has a blg which they have thoroughly updated, despite recent performance issues. The blog is at HICS | Hertfordshire Internet & Connectivity Services: Technical knowledge base I am sure the LEA team would not mind this being used as an example.

Fantastic suggestion, but I'm speculating this wouldn't work if the whole system goes down? This is essentially what's been happening in Birmingham.
hawc Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Thus could be used as a public record of service. Seeing as it is taxpayers money, then people deserve to know what service is being gotten for their money.
InspireICT Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Thus could be used as a public record of service. Seeing as it is taxpayers money, then people deserve to know what service is being gotten for their money. Even if it's not run by Link2ICT, something like a shared calendar would allow you all to keep an accurate diary of events/outages.
foofighterjim Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Looking forward to tomorrow ! Same here although only having a 3 day working week has me chasing my own tail today. ICT exams start Thursday morning, oh joy!
Little-Miss Posted May 6, 2014 Author Posted May 6, 2014 (edited) I've got so much going on in my head recently I completely forgot about it!! But I shall see you all there tomorrow! Edited May 7, 2014 by Little-Miss
Little-Miss Posted May 7, 2014 Author Posted May 7, 2014 Ha! If anyone else is here....I'm the one with the pink hair
Little-Miss Posted May 7, 2014 Author Posted May 7, 2014 Green jumper? Yeah, I realised who you were afterwards! Sorry about that!!
Little-Miss Posted May 7, 2014 Author Posted May 7, 2014 Ooh where were you @chippo? Did I ignore you too? I liked it. Feel like they're taking what we're saying on board. I need to get Mr Mackey an Edugeek lanyard I think...
Michael Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 It was a productive day, but let's see if Link2ICT deliver. It was good to put faces to names of people I regularly talk to too!
Little-Miss Posted May 7, 2014 Author Posted May 7, 2014 Yeah! Even though I was a bit slow to remember people at first. So who was there in the end? I'm glad members did turn up as otherwise I feel people would have missed the opportunity to say what they feel and possibly get something done about it, instead of just venting on here. We tried to convince them to have an official presence on Edugeek, but they were a bit hesitant which I can kinda understand.
Little-Miss Posted May 8, 2014 Author Posted May 8, 2014 It'll be difficult as we were sat in groups on different tables. There was a table for Firewall, web filtering, web based services and subscriptions. Amanda said a summary will be sent out including points that were raised. I'm sure others may be able to tell you questions they asked and the answer they got.
Tricky_Dicky Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 I was there. Thought it was very good and I'm still trying to figure out what Andys screen name is. Looking forward to seeing the official report from Amanda and the exact time scales of when things are going to be delivered. Hoping I make the cut for the 10 trial schools for the new filtering as well.
MrPstv Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Taa daa, At last we had a meeting with Link2ict that does not involve the dreaded sales pitch.. @Little-Miss i knew who you were from the point go, as for anyone else, err no apart from the Account Managers and a couple of engineers from Link. Overall it was a productive feedback session points from both sides have been aired and taken on board,as was mentioned we should be at the front of all communications as we are the bods sorting out the challenges/problems.. Now that we an have an idea of what to expect the next time we will hopefully have some more productive ideas/pointers to voice..
Little-Miss Posted May 8, 2014 Author Posted May 8, 2014 @Little-Miss i knew who you were from the point go.... I hope that's a good thing... To be fair, it wouldn't have been particularly hard to deduce. Did we say hi?! I realised the night before that i hadn't actually registered for the thing so did it quite late. When i turned up there wasn't a badge for me and they did wonder whether i was actually coming! haha
MrPstv Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 I think we sort of said Hi! i was the guy you spoke to first when you came in, you asked me about the information pack that was on the table...the short long haired dude lol
