It should be labelled to match that of the patch panel. If it doesn't then you're stuffed really.

The only alternative is put a cable tester either end which makes the LEDs on the switch flash consistently (or in a pattern) not like others in use.

Yep, a person each end with walkie talkie each and plug something in and see which port lights up on the switch. Simplest way off the top of my head.

These guys are worth their weight in gold - IntelliTone Pro Toner and Probe Kit

You plug one end into the network point you want to locate on the patch panel which then sends a tone (digital or analogue) down the wire, this is in turn picked up by the probe.

When I started my new job a few months back this was one of the first tools I got - very little was labelled up!

you could always look at the mac address table for the corresponding port on the switch then look at your dhcp leases to find the name of the pc etc?

Yeah that's what I had to do when I discovered that every socket across two buildings was wrongly labelled. Fun summer that was.

When a contractor disconnected the patch panel and connected everything up randomly, they were politely told to come and fix their mistake...

Documentation.

Documentation is the easy way to find out. All the other ways are hard(er) ways.

(before I sound like a conceited arse-wipe about this, please note that this posting is a 'do as I say, not as I do' kind of thing. Only our servers are actually documented.)

This is the kind of kit I was looking for, thanks a lot. Due to awful Network Managers (and lazy NM's @Ephelyon), all or most sockets are labelled but incorrectly. Using this kit and about 3 years of my life I will get the whole school wiring perfect!

If your lucky enough to have all gigabit devices then plug a 100meg device in and hunt the orange link light.

if not just force a laptop to run in 10mb mode and look for that

The lack of labelling was there when I inherited this system, as you know very well... the only additional mapping out that has been done so far has been done by me.

Now get off Facebook (I can see you) and get some work done!
