I thought apple tv / airplay used bonjour, although not sure what they use to stream the audio / video as far as codec's, I presume h264 / mp4 or similar ?

 

You are correct. Bonjour is a broadcast protocol though which makes it very hard to route across VLANS / Subnets. For the codecs they support MPEG4 and H.264 codecs. You can test this by using something like Airserver or AirSquirrel, they require you to install aditional codecs on windows. Aerohive offers their Bonjour Gateway which listens to all subnets and rebroadcasts bonjour requests over different subnets, it works but if you have 80 AppleTV's in the same subnet you end up with 80 AppleTV's on your iPads.

 

Now with the Bluetooth exchange of AirPlay information only the ip adresses are exchange. If your routing is correct they connect in an instant and you only see the AppleTV that is actually nearby your actual location. Works like a charm for classrooms.

When have Apple done that? You can plug an Android phone into a Mac. You can plug a Windows phone into a Mac. Microsoft have even made a software connector for Microsoft phones for the Mac. The only thing Apple have stopped people (Palm) doing is pretending that their phones are iPhones to fool iTunes into syncing with them. I think that was petty on Apple's part but there you have it.

The sheep are those that believe everything Apple has to say and run behind following the people who say them. At the end of the day everyone has their preferences, I don't for 1 second think the 64bit processor will make a single bit of difference in daily performance really... but what hets to me is that if Apple say it's the next best thing everyone thinks that must be the case that's what I define as a "flock" of sheep!

 

It helps your case if you don't try to make a strong argument against cold, hard facts. The cold hard facts are that the A7 processor blew away every other smartphone CPU at the time of its release based on independent testing. No fairy dust or reality distortion field required.

Apple have a better system, AirPlay, which I believe Google are trying to mimic with Chromecast.

My Nexus 5 supports AirPlay too. As Apple say, there's an app for that!

You don't even need to do that if your music has been uploaded to Google Play Music or can be accessed via DLNA.

 

There are also lots of ways to transfer files wirelessly to an Android device e.g. AirDroid, DroidNAS etc.

I know that processor is the fastest in terms of benchmarking etc... what I'm saying is a 64bit processor in a mobile phone isn't needed and won't improve your experience in day to day activities enough to justify Apple's claims, it's like Siri, same concept Apple claimed it could do all this and that and then before they knew it people went to use it and it wouldn't understand the words you where saying to it. What Apple says isn't always the true factor that everyone should follow just because Apple says it's good isn't always the case it is, it's another marketing technique for people to buy into their goods again and again.

That say's every major ARM manufacturer is moving to 64, not much on why.

 

The answer, of course, is two fold. More video based applications - higher resolutions, video phones, personal movies, editing, etc. And... Games - physics, AI, etc. Unlike the living room, the single unified device is a practical reality in the mobile world.

My point is based on price and configurability and unless Apple open up the OS it will never be as configurable as an android. Not fussed about hardware specs as they have pretty much reached a plateau point.

But does that really matter to anyone apart from a tiny minority? My iPhone does everything I want it to do and it does it well. I'd bet that the vast majority of people who use Android phones buy them because they're cheaper than the iPhone, not because they can root it. I doubt that they'd ever do anything which isn't possible outside of the stock interface.

I did find if you jailbreak an iDevice it's the best thing out there then, all the extra configuration's, tweaks and mods make the iPhone amazing!

Just going to chip in here, personally i have always generally been pro-android and anti-apple,with android being more configurable and customisable in general (Roms etc) and all that, but i have also since found i can't be arsed with faffing around with my phone, i rooted my old one for all of a ocuple of weeks before restoring the factory settings, so i think my next phone is just going to be an iphone.

 

Also KitKat has been out for a long time and it's only just started rolling out to Samsung's flagship s4 (which is my current phone)

You know what you're going to get with an iPhone, android can be very hit and miss.

Many thanks on your post about AirPlay over Bluetooth. Will be very handy I am able to get it to work.

 

I have updated both my iPhone (5S) and iPad (64gb 4th gen) to iOS 7.1 and an Apple TV to 6.1 All 3 have Bluetooth on, and discoverable, however they don't find each other.

 

Am I missing a trick or two here to enable AirPlay over Bluetooth? I am trying in vain but nothing seems work.

 

Can you shed some light or advise please?

Something constructive:

 

iOS 7.1 and AppleTV 6.1 contain a Bluetooth pairing method for AirPlay. With this it is really easy to connect to an AppleTV that is located in a different subnet. Before we had to use a Bonjour Gateway, creating a huge list of all our AppleTV's and Macs in the network on a iPad. With this (with my limited testing so far..) it only shows the AppleTV's that are really nearby and have swapped IP information for AirPlay. Great solution.

Of course,that's the simple short-sighted anti-Apple answer isn't it. However, like most things, the real story is a bit more interesting and more fact-filled.

 

The Nitro render engine is restricted at least for one very good reason because it uses JIT, which poses a security risks if 3rd party apps were allowed to use it.

But, let's say Apple did bow to pressure from all of those people who aren't actually iOS users anyway for some reason and allowed access to Nitro. A short while later, when the malware floodgates open and iOS has the same 800 percent increase in malware that Android had in 2013, then Apple would be crucified by the media and all of the lemming like Apple-haters who had been decrying iOS' lack of "openness".

Of course, Google hasn't received the flak about Android malware that Apple would receive for two reasons (1) because the Google-haters aren't nearly so rabid or prone to spew forth bile without actual facts to back them up and (2) people don't generally expect Android to be free from malware anymore. They do expect this from iOS. And, given that a recent study showed that only .07% of mobile malware targets iOS while 79% targets Android (far disproportionate to the higher market share of Android - so arguing iOS has "security by obscurity" is entirely without merit) it's clear that Android is far from free of malware and has some real security issues. Given the high value target iOS users are to malware writers - isn't it so very odd that they are targeted so infrequently? Or, perhaps it's just that Apple may be on to something when it comes to mobile security.

 

Of course, if you want to have a hack-tabulous time on your smartphone or tablet - you should buy an Android. Just don't be surprised when you are infected with malware. If you do, them the article below can help.

99 per cent of people are not even bothered about a Jailbreak anymore, if they want to or even understand how to do this, they will buy an Android phone. There's a lot a great jailbreak tweaks for the iPhone and iPad and many of them let you do a lot more on the device, BUT the people doing this are prepared to DFU their iPhone/iPad on a few occasions, the general population won't have the clue what to do next if this happens so they don't play with Jailbraking

 

Apple's view is all about the user experience to make it as easy as possibly to do want you want to do on the device, just like a Mac...
