CAM Posted February 6, 2014 Author Posted February 6, 2014 A lot of apps use it but there is a catch, they cannot see how many stars you rated an app. So the 5 stars is just a suggestion, not an enforcement, although worded in such a manner that you think they do know what rating you gave the app and that you won't get a reward if you vote less. The entire mobile "game" market has nothing at all to do with gaming and everything to do with being a crafty social engineering playground. Why else do you get rewards in Farmville for asking friends for help? Social engineering to make you recruit more people. Or using weird virtual currencies like Gems or Doughnuts in-place of actual monetary values? To devalue the currency and allow crafty tricks like offering currency in steps of 500 / 1000 / 2000 and pricing items at strangely non-rounded prices like 550 or 1600 to force you to buy the more expensive exchange tiers. (In this example, you'd have to buy 1000 instead of just 500 for the 550 item, or 2000 instead of 1000+500 for the 1600 item). Even titles like Loadout are crafty. They know the childish humour of the game will appeal to the audience, hence pricing ~£35 which is well over the cost of normal "skins" to allow the player to take off their pants... (yes, actual example! Pardon the pun too...) Do a bit of research into the social engineering that takes place in the F2P market and you'd see what really goes on to dupe you into their back pockets and stop playing such titles rather quickly.
Garacesh Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 (edited) Oh, I know plenty about the social engineering of it and I think it's absolutely abhorrent - especially when used in games aimed at the young such as the My Little Pony game which received a tonne of controversy. There's only one game I've made in-app purchases for, and that's Sonic Dash. Why? Because I needed to buy things to progress? Nah, I enjoyed the game and didn't mind paying to around £2 remove the ads and actually give something back to the developers that made the game I've spent a little too much time on. Gotten up to world 4 in PvZ2 without spending a penny and I'm going to complete the game (when I get round to it..) in just the same manner. I tell a lie. I also purchased the full version of Plague Inc. and its add-on disease types. But that's paying for content, and I don't mind that because I don't feel the game was released with content cut to make you sponge on DLC (like common AAA titles these days that you don't even get for free!) Good point here. The DLC for Plague Inc is well worth the extra dollar! But then that's an example of well a game can be marketed for mobiles.

The Android version of the game is even worse. The company's new freemium game Dungeon Keeper tricks frustrated players into leaving bad reviews on its own site, instead of on the Google Play Store, Gamasutra reports. Here's exactly how the ruse plays out: Dungeon Keeper, like most mobile apps, prompts players every so often to give it a rating on the Google Play Store or App Store. In the Android version of the game, there are two possible outcomes when you get a rating prompt. If you choose five stars, you're gently nudged over to the Google Play Store to leave a review. If you choose between one and four stars, Dungeon Keeper pops up an email form where you can only send feedback to developer EA instead of publicly voicing your concerns. You can still, of course, manually visit the Google Play Store and leave a bad review, but in a world where the difference between a success or failure of an app often comes down to its reviews, EA is stacking the deck in its favor.

BKGarry Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 I think I am going to go for War for the Overworld :-) Although I did start playing Dungeon Keeper on my Mac at home and stuck at the same old level as when I was a youngun. The thing is, if they had release theme hospital like this, I don't think we would of minded so much, taking a day to build say the operating theatre, but a Day to dig in DK - HELL NO!!!!!

This is one of those games I know I'm going to absolutely hammer once it's out and I don't want to over-play it before it's completed. As for this version of Dungeon Keeper? Blah. It can go and rot. Still haven't bought DK from Gog, but that's because there's apparently a lot of compatibility issues with Win7. Anyone bought it who can confirm if it works or not?

I can find the startup and mapping script used for it (on my home MacBook Pro so will have to be this evening), but it will need adapting for windows over a self-contained mac app. :-) I was thinking the same thing about WFTO
Mako Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Dungeon Keeper runs flawlessly in DOSBox. You may need to tweak the DOSBox ini to emulate a computer closer to what is appropriate for DK. If I recall, it was running a bit slow out of the (dos)box, so I had to increase the cycles and other settings to get it to run at a suitable speed. Alternatively, run a virtual machine of Win95 or 98 and install it there. DK II, however, has issues...

Best voice over ever. I too still have my original disc and I have been playing the mobile one and getting annoyed with it. I would gladly have paid £5 for the game if it didn't have all the scam purchase stuff and I'm going to get my old game out my mums loft to start playing again so I can bin off this rubbish on my phone.

Only ask as I saw Hammerwatch there (Hammerwatch for download $1.59 - GOG.com) which is awesome, I got through steam, so didn't know if buying stuff there gives steam keys
sparkeh Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Just so you know, DK runs in DosBox, I found the default settings didn't work very well. All I needed to do was alter CPU cycles to 'auto' and the video output to something other than 'surface' to make it playable. Also when you are in game, hit ALT+R to up the resolution and its looks much better.
