Iain.Faulkner Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Not been very active on this recently...but been finding running hard work, too hot and asthma not been great either. Went out last night though for a late evening run, managed to cover 7.6km so was my best run since June (not only in terms of distance but also pace and how the run felt). Just under 3 weeks till the Wigan 10k, so need to get out more frequently if I want to do any justice to it. 1
jdoyle Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 well, did the Chippenham Half Marathon yesterday and beat my PB/broke the 2hr mark in spite of it being much hotter than I like (the day started chilly and I had hoped it would stay coolish) Had done Reading HM last year and ran a PB of 2hrs 3mins 56secs; Chippenham HM completed in 1:hr 58mins 15secs. The winner put in a 1hr 3minute performance. In the first half the miles were all <9mins; started slowing down on the second half but all miles < 10mins. Bristol HM next Sunday - plan to keep the pace down on this one.
Sam_Brown Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 I've started my half marathon training. It's not until December but I'm so paranoid about getting injured I'm taking it very slowly. Literally running 1k or 2k per time at the moment even though I know I can do more. Just going to slowly build it up over the weeks until I hit 40 km in weekly mileage a few weeks before then I'll be taking it slowly.. 1
jdoyle Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 what HM have you opted for? Injury is always a worry for me (dodgy knee and have injured the calf muscle a couple of times); more so having paid out to enter the various events.
Sam_Brown Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Down in Portsmouth. Going to be nice and chilly running along the coast in the middle of December I've given myself lots of time to get ready. Just hoping I don't get injured along the way. 1
Iain.Faulkner Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Wigan 10k yesterday, great run, great atmosphere :-) Ran the full 10k, on Strava I timed it at 58:13 for the 10k, my official chip time was 59:07 so either way it took at least 50 seconds off my 10k PB :-) Just got to find my next event now :-) 1

Always feels good to break a PB. I don't know about Strava - tend to use GarminConnect and TheRunningBug. Do you sync your running watch with Strava? Does it matter what make?

I used to use the MapMyRun app on my iPhone but found it was getting a bit wayward so made the move to a Garmin Forerunner 10, hence my use of GarminConnect. Just started playing around with Groups, Courses and Segments on Garmin Connect and there's a nice feature to compare different runs 1
Iain.Faulkner Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 That looks impressive...maybe have to speak to my wife and see if she fancies buying me one for Christmas :-) Some impressive speed improvements on there as well I see :-) 1
jdoyle Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 That looks impressive...maybe have to speak to my wife and see if she fancies buying me one for Christmas :-) Some impressive speed improvements on there as well I see :-) Definitely recommend a watch for the data collection and the ability to review runs/timings/distance etc. Don't know if Strava has the elevation data but I get that with GarminConnect as well as the mile times etc. Swindon was my first HM and very much a get around without turning into a lump of jelly - knew there were hills and planned a slow start. Reading was supposed to be flatter so just wanted to beat the Swindon time : went off faster but you'll see my last few miles were getting slower..... Both were running on my own. Chippenham was supposed to be flat but not as flat as I hoped; this was with a running partner and we both wanted to beat the 2hr mark. Bristol HM this weekend will be a slower pace, certainly at the start.
Iain.Faulkner Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 I think HM is the next aim for me...probably looking at the Wilmslow Half next March sort of time. Gives me a good few months to up the training runs. Went out last night for my first post Wigan 10k run, did a quick 5.8km at a good pace. Did one of my quickest 1km in 5:17 as well 1

HM training in winter will be good! Well done on the speed - I do think there is more energy in the legs after an event (if that makes any sense at all). I lived in Wilmslow a long (long, long) time ago, having been born just down the road in Macclesfield. Too young and too long ago to remember anything about the place. Hilly?
Iain.Faulkner Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 Good man. HM training in winter will be good! It's pretty flat I think, it certainly tends to be where most of the people around me do their first HM as it's known for being good for beginners (I think).
Iain.Faulkner Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Managed to get out for a ParkRun on Saturday morning...not my best time at 28 mins 31 seconds, but like being out nice and early, set me up for a really good day :-) 2
jdoyle Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Completed Bristol HM on Sunday with another PB - 1:57:37. A very well run event on the calendar for next year. 1
Iain.Faulkner Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 Went out again last night got to about 2km and felt really good so (to quote Forrest Gump) "I just kept running"....did my longest ever run :-) Clocked up 11.2km in about 1hr 5 minutes...set new PB's in all sorts of distances. New 5km pb, new 10km pb, new half mile pb, new 1km pb :-) 2
Sam_Brown Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 is this the one on the 20th December? Sorry for long delay! Yeah that's the one. Only 90 odd days to go! 1
ICTLady Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 @Sam_Brown, that looks like a great event, I am quite tempted to enter the half myself now I have looked at it I have my first half on 4th October at the Bournemouth Marathon Festival, and will be starting half term in style with the Great South Run. Feeling really good. So great to see people here who started on the C25K programme and are still running better and stronger. Well done everyone! 2
jdoyle Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Managed a 20.38mile run on Saturday morning. 3hrs 31mins 45seconds. Started off with my usual Saturday morning run with Shin Splints and then ran homeward with a loop. https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/903042154 Furthest I've run to date as well as the longest time.
sippo Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Why did you start at one side of town and finish the other? How did you get back? I want to train for a half/full marathon, but just don't have the time currently. Can't run in the mornings as have to get the kids ready for school, then after work I pick them up. Then it's too late. Just not enough hours in the day.
jdoyle Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 Sippo, the normal Shin Splints routes start at the Sun Inn on Saturday morning and Wednesday evenings. Wife runs too so she drove us there on Saturday. Did the approx 6.5miles training route from the Sun Inn and added a loop of Coate Water to take it to 8miles. From there, headed up Marlborough Rd, Signal Way and then onto the old railway track heading down to the back of John Lewis at Mannington. Followed the cycle track to Blagrove, across to Grange Park to Lydiard Park, Middleaze, Shaw, Nine Elms and Peatmoor. Back of Shaw Forest, through Linear Park looping back to the entrance of Lydiard Park to Middleaze, Shaw and then home to Nine Elms. The more I can do the further away from home the better - the voice that says "you can't do this" gets louder the closer I get to home. My kids are older now so I've more time to run. Just couldn't do this when they were younger. I've stepped back from football too - my eldest boy is now managing the youngest boys' football team and other parents are doing admin chores. Last year I did the Cricklade 10k and then ran home afterwards; I'll be doing the Cricklade Half Marathon October 4th and then running home to get another 20mile run in (providing it's not too hot). A number of Shin Splinters are coming with the wife and myself to run the Dublin Movember 10k 14th November. While I've given up drinking, the others haven't. Could get messy. If you fancy a run around Swindon let us know. 5mile option available as part of the Swindon Half Marathon on the 11th October Johnny 1
jdoyle Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 Another PB at the Cheltenham HM on Sunday. In at 1hr 56mins 44secs chip time. 1
