nyiss Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 completed W1R1 yesterday, seems like a long way to go until 5k at the moment but I am sure in time that will seem more achievable! Since it hasn't been long since I broke my foot oddly, I decided for now to have 1 day break in between each run whilst I get into the swing of things but I was actually gutted this morning when I realised that means I can't go onto R2 until tomorrow. This mind-set is more than a bit alien to me right now but I ain't complaining!
ICTLady Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Wahoo, I completed W5R3 yesterday - 20 minutes of running without a break! It's the first night that I've felt a bit miserable about going out there but I think that was the weather. Felt so proud of myself afterwards Well done @nyiss and hope you continue to enjoy it. 1
buzybee Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Well done Harry Monkey and everyone else. Needing to loose a bit after years on not doing much exercise, started going on the treadmill and croos trainer which I invested in. May give the Couch to 5K a go now that days are lighter. Sound like good fun. Good luck Everyone.

This mind-set is more than a bit alien to me right now but I ain't complaining! You should be having a day's rest between runs anyway; it gives your body time to recover before you put it under more pressure. If you don't give yourself time to recover, you just keep doing more and more tissue damage until you end up with a serious injury that puts you out of action for weeks or even months which will massively hinder your progress. Don't feel guilty about having a day off - your body needs it! I completed W1R2 this morning, surprised that it felt quite a bit easier, I expected it to take at least three weeks before I noticed any marked improvement. 1
nyiss Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 I completed W1R2 this morning, surprised that it felt quite a bit easier, I expected it to take at least three weeks before I noticed any marked improvement. Thanks for the advice I finished R2 today and after reading your post I hoped that it would also be that bit easier but I thought it was actually slightly more difficult than R1. I think the problem was that i accidently ran faster, getting back to my house too early and having to lap the cal-de-sac for the end walk so now my neighbours think im weird -.-
HarryMonkey Posted February 8, 2014 Author Posted February 8, 2014 I did W5R2 the other day and found to my great surprise that by half way through the recovery walk after the first 8 minute run I was ready to start running again. W5R3 tomorrow ... a straight 20 minute run. I suspect that will be a whole different matter!!
HarryMonkey Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 Start Week 7 today. That's it now, no more recovery walks, it's all straight running. I did W6R3 on Sunday and that wasn't too bad, just a straight 25 minute run, but from here on in it's going to be tough I think. Three 25 minute runs this week. I just hope and pray that my knee holds out although, it does appear to be improving. How is everyone else getting on?
ICTLady Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 I'm about to do W8R1 tonight. Found W7 hard work but not too hard. For the second two, I listened to my own music instead of the podcast, and have also experimented with some new routes, which has helped loads. How did W7 go for you, @HarryMonkey?
hawc Posted February 24, 2014 Posted February 24, 2014 I got to W2R1 then my knee decided to do it's normal really painfulness so I am out of the club for at least 3 months.
HarryMonkey Posted February 25, 2014 Author Posted February 25, 2014 I'm about to do W8R1 tonight. Found W7 hard work but not too hard. For the second two, I listened to my own music instead of the podcast, and have also experimented with some new routes, which has helped loads. How did W7 go for you, @HarryMonkey? I was dreading it a bit ... no longer the luxury of a recovery walk but I was pleasantly surprised. R1 was just a complete buzz, I didn't want to stop, I upped the pace for the last minute and actually got a minute or two into the warmdown walk and just found that I had to start running again!!! R2 was much harder as I was away for a few days and whilst I had a lovely park to run in (Bradgate Park in Leics), it was an "out and back" run and the second half was hard as I had the wind in my face and it was slightly uphill, there were points when it was all I could do to battle against the wind and keep going. R3 was on Sunday and I was back on home ground and I found it much better, it's strange because I seem to get stronger as the run goes on, the last minute I was able to really stride out and was much more relaxed. I start W8 tonight and can't believe it's less than two weeks before my race, I'm nervous but really looking forward to it at the same time. I had my Macmillan race top arrive last week and that really brought it home. If someone had told me that in just 9 weeks I would be capable of running a 5k race I would have laughed them out of the room, now I can't wait.
HarryMonkey Posted February 25, 2014 Author Posted February 25, 2014 I got to W2R1 then my knee decided to do it's normal really painfulness so I am out of the club for at least 3 months. Sorry to here that @hawc I had a problem with my knee but I bought some proper running shoes and that has made a huge difference. I've also been running with a double thickness of tubigrip on my knee for support and that has helped as does the ice pack afterwards and a liberal application of Volterol prior to my run. Don't worry, that 3 months will soon go and you'll be back up and running again, just don't lose sight of your goals.
Neil-Millgate Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Well done to everyone one still pressing play. Unfortuanutly I have joined the list of casualties Started this in Jan and got ready to destroy W5R1....and then spent most of last week flat on my back due to a nasty tweak while putting my shoes on Up and walking about again now but going to be at least another two weeks before I can hit the road again.
hawc Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Need to wait for a letter with an appointment to have it MRI'd so we can see what the damage is. This is not just one off. I had a thread about this earlier.
tudorcrisp Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 Thanks to all of the posts on here, I too have found the couch to 5k programme and downloaded all of the podcasts. up until 4 years a go I was relatively fit, playing football regularly etc... 2 kids later and any attempts at running have found me struggling. I think I still have the mindset of 4 years ago and the body is just not in that same place! I really need to start again and this looks like just the thing. Has anyone been doing the strength and flex programme along side the couch to 5k? Have they found it helps?
tmcd35 Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I gave up a couple of weeks back. Combination of bad mood (locked myself out of my house) and shin splins. Saw Beeb program dissecting the foot the other day that explained exactly why I was getting shin splins. Bad advice in the podcasts about trying to put your heel down first - not how your foot is designed to work! Bought a treadmill the other week and have started again barefoot - much, much better. Also picked up a rowing machine, very interesting exercise. Going out fir my first Bike ride this Saturday. Probably over doing it, but U'm determined to get rid of this mid section!
MattDLEA Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 Not read the thread but i did a bit of the couch to 5 k last year, I used to play rugby and footy but had been stagnent for a few year. I found it really hard. To start with been out of breath and THINKING i couldnt go on. I am now a member of a running club and doing the GNR and another half marathon this year if my hernia op goes ok. What I would say to knowing what i know now. Is people when they start running , run to fast. Take it easy with the speed to start with and your mind is probably the thing that is holding you back, your mind will say no before your body does. If your body is hurting then you are doing something wrong, im not talking about a bit of DOM's but if you have knee pain or any pain really then there is something wrong with your technique. Have a look at chi running, I have changed to this/natural running and its much more efficient. tmcd35 dont know what podcasts you have been listening to but heal strike is really bad that causes all kinds of injury especially shin splints. Landing on the ball of your foot will use your ligaments in your feet giving you more spring and 'free' energy. But to all, keep going and dont give up as soon as you can do 5k with out stopping no matter how slow you will start to find it lots easier
HarryMonkey Posted February 27, 2014 Author Posted February 27, 2014 I had my race number come today which has suddenly made it a whole lot more real. A week on Sunday, my first bit of competitive running for 40 years ... <>
HarryMonkey Posted March 2, 2014 Author Posted March 2, 2014 Just finished week 8 and decided to go out with a bang. Only got a week to go now until my 5k race so from now on it's all about distance for me rather than minutes. I've just completed my first 5k run in over 40 years in just 36 minutes (my target was 40 - 45). If someone had told me just a few weeks ago that I would be capable of running 5 kilometres I would have laughed at them. I'm looking forward to my race now next Sunday with a renewed confidence. If anyone is reading this thread thinking they'll never be able to run, think again. This plan has been fantastic for me and I will be keeping up with the running once its finished. Right then, lets bring on Week 9.
Tesla Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 nice one i'm stepping up my game a bit this week, hope to have a park run done again before the end of March.
