jimmckenna Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Hi, One or two of our Prometheann IWB's have suddenly developed a "spike" The user can be working away quite merrily writing on the board when suddenly you will see a sudden spike almost like a "heart trace" . I have searched elsewhere and most suggestions are either to update the driver or firmware for the board. Having tried both these suggestions to no avail just wondering if any body has seen this problem and what was their resolution? Any help gratefully received. Thanks!!
bladedanny Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 (edited) As silly as it sounds. I've also seen intermittent spiking when an optical mouse is positioned perfectly on a wood grained surface making the mouse think it's moving. Usually turning the mouse upside down will either solve it or at least eliminate it as a cause. Aside from that updating firmware has often worked for me, but I have also had to have a few board controllers replaced by promethean. --edit-- I've also know that electrical interference from extension cables etc. can cause spiking, although I've never personally had this issue. Have considered electrical interference nothing of note near both locations where I am having issues. I'm sure it's not the board controller either as I actually moved another IWB to the room location and the problem remained. Again, thanks for your input!! Cheers!!

I am about to update the firmware but will have a look at the mouse too. Cheers. Rats! It's a serial connection, I will have to fit a USB connection and will let you know how I get on after.

The OP isn't clear what is spiking. Is it the mouse cursor, does it happen when the surface is touched or the mouse is clicked?, is whole screen suggesting a Video/projector issue?
twin--turbo Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 We get this in two situations. 1) physical damage to the membrane. 2) the circuit borad on the back becomming faulty. Luckily we currently have spare parts to fix both issues. Never touched firmware. Rob

Thanks for the reply. Spikes when the board is touched with Promethean Pen. Have tried different Pens still persists. Not whole screen. Membrane appears to be intact with no obvious damage. Running out of ideas!!

GaRobbie Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 I would recommend checking your cabling. First try cycling the connections including the power at the board. If that fails try using a different USB cable (a known working one if possible). It’s a standard A to B USB cable though you want to keep it shorter that 5 meters / 15 feet.

Alis_Klar Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 All our 25ish Promethean boards are 6 or 7 years old (purple frame type) we have had quite a lot of intermittent spiking on boards. Mostly serial connection. Have people generally found that replacing serial connection with USB improves things? How do CAT5 USB extenders affect spiking? Are the latest Promethean Boards still prone to this issue or have they finally fixed this issue? How are they fixing it with firmware/software updates? (communication protocol tweaks?)
Joanne Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 I have some ABV378PRO's that have spiked. One was fully replaced, one had the electronics replaced (yesterday). As others have said, before Promethean will send out any parts you have to do the firmware, driver and replace the USB cable. Mine go through a wall box, so a direct cable rules out any of that. Again, as already said, USB cable should be less than 5m. If I ever get a faulty one, I always do these 3 checks before calling support.
