Christmas Telly

Anyone else think it was utter turd this year? I think it's been getting worse every year but I suspect that's just old age.

The two pieces of telly that seemed to hold it together were Mrs Browns Boys and Still Open All Hours. The latter particularly, as they didn't attempt to unnecessarily modernise the humour, and it was very true to the original. Odd without Ronnie of course but it still felt exactly like it was regardless.

A look through Radio Times confirmed our thoughts of exactly the same as last year and probably in the same order

Not good, I agree. I have watched Dr Who, Gangsta Granny (very funny with lots of famous people including an hilarious cameo by Robbie Williams), Toy story 3 and currently the Big Fat Quiz of the Year but that is about all. We can't bear Mrs Brown's Boys, it gives us the creeps.

Agree about telly. Only thing we tuned in for was Dr Who and Strictly. Mostly just watched our own films, DVDs and Netflix.

It's crap. We've spent more time on Dave and Gold watching classic comedies than anything new.

 

Even the Radio Times once a bastion of Christmas TV has remained almost untouched this year.

Dave and UKGold (whatever it is these days) are the only things I will often find myself watching it for. Dwarf, Horses, Ronnies, Adder of the Black, Open All Hours etc. They don't make em like they used to.

 

Anyway, enough whinging, I don't know what we expect any more The one thing I found hilarious was that BBC rescheduled Open All Hours to boxing day rather than christmas day as they didn't think it was good enough for prime time 'Day viewing. Well done BBC, by doing exactly that you managed to get an adult show topping the Christmas charts instead of something mainstream! (I like MBB, it's stupid and funny so right at my level. But it's not classic comedy.)

I haven't watched anything on TV this year. The same as last year and the years before that. We stock up on DVDs and work our way through them. So at least we get to watch what we want that way.

Now it's raining, a fence post and two panels have gone ( had to go out in the freezing wind and rain to rip one out that was in danger of damaging the neighbours car.)

 

I Just hope the post is in a ground spike and not concreet.

Decent episodes of Enterprise and Stargate - for a change. Whiskey Galore, Titchfield Thunderbolt repeats apart from that a shed load of old cobblers as far as I saw. Only got Freeview but despite the heaps of Chanel's on that I have switched off most nights and listened to Planet Rock on an iPlayer App as the digital signal on the Pure radio vanished - never to be picked up again. The units about 10 years old now and they have stopped pushing out upgrades for it so, no doubt expecting it was never going to last that long.

It seemed to split opinions a bit. It was dead on the same humour as the original series so worked for me. The folks all loved it too. I suspect much of it may go way over the heads of youngsters

I enjoyed the two ballets on BBC2 & 4. I would have enjoyed Lady Gaga Meets The Muppets more if C5 hadn't left a huge swag of it out (it ran for 90 mins when shown in the US back in November). I am enjoying Worlds Strongest Man on 5 and tucked away on Challenge has been Britain's Strongest Man and World Masters Strongest Man. It's interesting that most of the other countries manage to stage these events indoors, yet here the competitors freeze to death on the dockside in Belfast or in a football ground in Leeds. I thought Dr Who was tosh and did the usual trick of trying to cram too much story into too little time. They should bring back 4 to 6 part stories and they should also check continuity; the Doctor does not need the help of the Time Lords to regenerate as River Song gave him her remaining generations. They should bring back the Master too and handle the continuity by having the Doctor wake up from a bad dream. There have been some good films on, like Fantasia, The Red Shoes and Guys and Dolls.

Don't miss Hollyoakes out of the comparison - tis based on real life after all isn't it:rolleyes: Amazes me that such a post watershead loaded script is allowed to be screened at 1830 hours in the evening. Are there really places 'up North' where such behaviour is common place anyhow?

LOL love that, Dr Who was about only thing i've enjoyed throughout this year, though Christmas episode wasnt overly amazing I thought, I like the look of Capaldi, though I am waiting for him to swear too.

 

I am the only one in my family that doesnt think much of Mrs Browns Boys here, glad theres some decent films on Sky though this time around that I havent seen and I have had some decent DVDs to be able to watch them as well, though the boy has taken up most of christmas this year, which is extremely refreshing

I've been watching 1970s adaptations of Jane Austen novels. I downloaded P&P to watch on the plane because the actors' diction was really good in those days and can be heard above the engine noise.

I know these things are well written but I HATE Jane Austen. I just don't get it - I never have. I read P&P at school and S&S at home and got them completely confused. I have re-read P&P as an adult and I still don't get it.

I love most of the Bronte novels though

Real entertainment: BT Sport Luton v Barnet... ten minutes to go on a pitch with so much flooding there's a deep end and a shallow end. It shouldn't have started let alone been allowed to finish. The ball won't roll. It's just as well that balls are made of plastic these days!
