About bloody time, only 15 years overdue. I honestly think we are alone in education IT that we know what we're doing and actually move with the times. Government, DVLA, NHS, some communications companies (ironically) have barely got a working computer system between them. I feel sorry for all the intelligent IT people they have working for them that aren't allowed to do a proper job of it for once.

Gosh I can spread my £30 over twelve months! I think I'll just pay it up front...

 

They scrapped the dodad in the windscreen in South Australia years ago and almost immediately there was a huge increase in the number of untaxed and so uninsured cars on the road. I've heard that this has been an absolute nightmare when there is an accident. The person claiming has to sue the uninsured driver, who of course, declares themselves to be insolvent. Also, in SA the rego (which we would call tax) includes third party insurance. So it a driver runs a pedestrian over, the pedestrian is covered. Except, of course, they aren't if vehicle isn't registered (taxed).

yeah you're still going to have to pay an extra 5% to pay in instalments, just save the money each month and pay in one go

The tax disc is pretty much pointless already though... People get fined via the database at the moment as it is. The only people who use the disc are police when they do a stop check, and even then that system has pretty much changed to a computerised system instead.

 

It totally will cause an increase idiocy of people thinking they don't need to pay but that's their own fault really!

I sold my van recently, I was paying £500/year for tax and insurance, and only driving less than 2000 miles. Mrs Tonnixx has a car, and I just use my bicycle. If the tax was abolished completely, and the cost added to fuel I would have kept the van, but it just didn't make sense to own a vehicle that leaked money when not in use.

Things like VED are designed to get people to think about the environment. That seems to have worked in your case @jinnantonnixx, as it got a van off the road which wasn't necessarily needed...

However the environmental impact of producing a new car outweighs running an old car to the end of its life.

Don't kid yourself, VED is about extracting as much tax out of motorist as they can, as they know most people have little choice but to own a motor. Just some bright spark said "if we base it on emissions we can con the hippies into thinking we're saving the environment".

If it was truly about the environment you would pay less tax the older your car was and pay an extortionate figure for any brand new car.

Furthermore, the link between VED and pollution is tentative. I'm guessing a zero-rated runabout doing 30k/year pollutes more than my (ex-)van at 2k/year.

It's strange why the Government don't just include it with filling up at the pump. Make it the oil companies responsibility to pass on taxes to the Government (as they already do) *coughs* and there you have it.

 

- You can reduce the size of the DVLA sending out badges to people to stick in their cars

- You can reduce the size of Royal Mail sending out the badges

- We all save on paper/printing costs

- No need for a new computer system

- Frees up Police time even more

- Foreign drivers also pay into the system (as they fill up)

 

It's fair to say if you have an older car or one with a larger engine, you'll use more at the pump. You just add x amount of pence per litre and that's it. Why George is avoiding this method is really strange.
