Moving away from LEA

Hello,

 

We are looking at moving away from out Local authority for internet/filtering and firewall. We currently have our internet provided by them and they deal with Firewall/filtering their end. The problem with this is proxies! We are going to start rolling out BYOD across selected years (currently 6th form) and having them connect to a student wifi and manually select the proxy when inside school and disconnect when at home is not practical.

 

We are looking for a solution where

• No proxies (or be is visable proxies to the end user)
  
• On site filtering (websites etc)
  
• Firewall (ports, protocols etc that can be managed inside) We plan to use TMG to have all traffic going through this
  
• Lease line (100Mbs Up and Down that can be configured for users
  

 

The idea is a student with his/her own device can connect to a wireless network (using AD credentials) and not have to type proxy address in. Need to find out what you use (SonicWall/SmoothWall/ etc) if its good, what is useful and how you do it. We have had a look at SonicWall which seems to be useful to us but would like to hear from current users before we complete the proposal for SLT/SMT.

Not that I have any love lose for the LA that you are (probably) referring to, but the new firewalls are coming in over the weekend of the 14th December so it might be worth seeing how that plays out first.

We have asked them a number of times about proxies and removing them but so far we are still stuck with proxy's across our network. This has also affected us with Imero as our upstream proxy only allows a certain number of connections and with everyone accessing the same revision site it wont let all of them access it. Headaches all around for us

Ah, so not the one I was thinking of...

 

Most people on here seem to favour smoothwall but it's worth looking around at that.

 

Regards to leased lines the market is very competitive so get plenty of quotes and then get the different suppliers to fight it out to offer the best deal/service/equipment.

we are very happy with our Gigler/City Fibre gigabit line coupled with our Palo Alto 3020 firewall filter. Worth looking into them. Not sure if city fibre is in your area yet or not.

We have just been through this process and have a Watchguard Firewall with a Lightspeed Rocket for web filtering. Our lease line is with Virgin Media . No proxies - heaven.

Well we do all of the above with NO proxies either!!!

 

You get full AD auth, VPN, Lightspeed filtering, Fortinet firewall, inline anti-virus etc etc.
