Call from Microsoft about upcoming projects? Suspicious?

So I just had a call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft saying that they wanted to know if we had any upcoming projects they could help us with and wanting to know an awful lot about our infrastructure (which I didn't tell them).

I could be overly suspicious here but it just sounded really odd so I brushed them off.

Anyone else have a call like this?

Yes i have had that one - can't remember name of firm but after a bit of questioning they admitted they weren't from microsoft but sold microsoft products :-) a way to get past the call screening from reception

We have all sorts who are claiming to be from Microsoft or Dell or HP. They're invariably from a company that merely sells their wares. Waste of time in most cases.

Some form of company is doing the same thing with HP at the moment too. Its a sly tactic and causes me to hang up on them.

Ahh I had a call and letter from a company making it look like they were HP when my server warranty was up. Firmly on the blacklist now.

Just ask them for their micorsoft email to verify they are from the company.

Every single time I have done this they have hung up.

Thing is, Microsoft don't do direct sales like that. So do they really think we're that dumb? Ok, with someone like HP you could be tricked (even though their direct sales is HP Direct and they say so), but Microsoft? Do they come across people who have so little knowledge of the market?

I have had a call direct from Microsoft around the time our EES was due. I was very sceptical when it came through however an email later it was genuine.

I have had the we're phoning from HP company though, they have been crossed off my list.

Ah, yes. I too have had the odd phone call from (who I can only assume to be) Hue-Lit Picard. "Are you actually from Hewlett Packard or are you reselling?" usually gets them to 'fess up.

Not like I'd buy anything anyway. But it's nice to make them squirm.

i had this in the summer from 2 microsoft departments. the education team about the surfaces we ordered and the licence team about our ees about to expire.

that was fun the first time round talking to them as they wanted my email first for my ees to send a verification code to me to prove i was me then i asked them the same thing and they where like whaaaaaa.

they sent me details then ended up as they were from microsoft.

but back to the op yes also had this a few times got a receptionist who wont screen so all calls get to us and then i put them on hold and play the waiting game normily the phone dies before they go

It's been done by a Canadian teenager who got sued by Microsoft but who eventually got a free xbox out of them.

Gah! Ok time to create 'Len Ovo Computers' then.
