There are two versions of Windows 8, Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro, not counting Enterprise of course. Windows 8 is the rough equivalent of Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 8 Pro is the same as Windows 7 Pro.

 

Using the NET USE command on the command line will allow you to include authentication details in the command or it will prompt you for credentials when you run it.

N:\>net use /?
The syntax of this command is:

NET USE
[devicename | *] [\\computername\sharename[\volume] [password | *]]
       [/uSER:[domainname\]username]
       [/uSER:[dotted domain name\]username]
       [/uSER:[username@dotted domain name]
       [/sMARTCARD]
       [/sAVECRED]
       [[/DELETE] | [/PERSISTENT:{YES | NO}]]

NET USE {devicename | *} [password | *] /HOME

NET USE [/PERSISTENT:{YES | NO}]

 

Alternatively, if you have a Windows 2012 R2 file server, you can use a feature called Work Folders to connect your WinRT/Windows 8 non domain joined machines to a network area.

when mapping drives how did you deal with authentication as its not a domain member?

 

When setting the mapped drive, tick "Connect using different credentials" and in the pop up login with network login, e.g domain\username and save them off.

Ahh!! I want the user to type it each time as it will be a pooled resource. I think I have my answer in the other thread.

If I were to go for an inexpensive Windows tablet, this would be pretty high on my list. Latest generation Atom, can run Windows Pro, $400 so hopefully around the £320 mark here if there's any justice.

Yes this does look good, the only thing missing is the back camera - would have been good if they chucked in a 8mp rear camera as well. The bay trail atom processor is very good and has a better chipset for graphics as well.

Just want to point out it doesnt come windows 8 Pro only windows 8 (which doesnt have domain join)

Actually you are wrong if you look into it the new Surface RT 2 can now be joined to a domain and gives you a login screen. You can even customise what apps people get through GP! I know we have 2!

I was talking about the Asus Transformer that @Danp mentioned earlier. Sorry for any confusion.

We both seem to have purchased some but I was expecting mine to be able to join the domain.

 

Edit : I cant find anything that states Surface 2 can join a domain. It is still running RT.

Ah my bad couldn't find anything either! Went and checked the deputy's surface and it's a surface pro that's how we did it. Sorry didn't know I'm amazed we had the money for 2 pro's! Noone tells me nothing...

quite difficult i never worked out how to get my vivotab to boot from owt but the internal drive though i suppose you might be able to run from in windows itself but if you brick it on your own head be it.

Do we think that these tablets with keyboards are the way to go? Are there tablets which we can add to our domain, and have group policy security applied? We currently use desktops in our classrooms for teachers, would these also work? Do any tablets/laptops come with LAN or VGA ports?

I have just installed Windows 8.1 Pro on to an Asus Transformer. Joined it to the domain and all GPOs are working. I wouldnt currently recommend a tablet to replace your teachers PC in a classroom. Portability is what the tablets are about.

I used the ISO from the VLSC website. I didnt even have to boot from it. I just ran it from within Windows 8.1 on the device.

Has anyone managed to build these to a CC4 network? I tried to smart client it and didn't get very far. I have a Surface Pro.
