Cryptolocker Virus

Hi

 

Hearing a lot about this virus and the many problems it is causing by encrypting files and charging the user for an access key. Anyone seen any evidence for it yet or had first hand experience of it? If so any recommendations for safeguarding the network or precautionary tactics other than the obvious

Sophos say that their product protects against it and that they have been sent examples of the virus: Link

 

They've also had two people quoted in The Guardian: "If you haven't got a backup and you get hit by CryptoLocker, you may as well have dropped your PC over the side of a bridge," says Paul Ducklin, security adviser for anti-virus software company Sophos.

Jest seen on the bleeping site that if you do pay they will decrypt the files. I would have thought thry would have just taken the money and run.

I've heard of this occurring in other places near me, and plenty in K-12 sites in the US, but no direct experience - thank God.

With anything like this - if you can restore from backup then do so, even if it means losing some work.

Please don't pay.

It does leave something behind to prevent re-infection - and would you really trust that computer agajn, knowing that it has been compromised and not totally cleaned up?

A school in our area had a totally encrypted network after this, Servers and stations even the backup hard drives attached got encrypted.

10 BTC = £1337.90!!!!

 

CryptoLocker just got worse. 10 BTC to pay past ransom date.

 

The developers behind the file encrypting ransomware called CryptoLocker launched yesterday a dedicated decryption service that allows you to purchase the decryption key for encrypted files. The price for the decryption key, though, has been significantly increased from 2 bitcoins to 10 bitcoins.

Definitely coincidence since the price of a Bitcoin constantly changes. It's now £151.54 per BTC (so £1,515.40 for 10!).
