Good to see - now, I've got a question. Although I'm not a schoolcomms administrator, I've been told that I can't use schoolcomms to send out HTML emails (although I'd actually want to send out both text and HTML). I'd like to copy and paste in some HTML and have been told it won't allow it to happen. Are there any plans to allow HTML? I'll try to make it to BETT and see, but an answer in advance would be good so that I don't have to look stupid at the stand!

I've heard of this occurring in other places near me, and plenty in K-12 sites in the US, but no direct experience - thank God. With anything like this - if you can restore from backup then do so, even if it means losing some work. Please don't pay. It does leave something behind to prevent re-infection - and would you really trust that computer agajn, knowing that it has been compromised and not totally cleaned up? Tom

I support 50% Macs, perfectly happily (well apart from the cost and the extra workload they place on me). However for school use, I'd still recommend PCs. Most of the software staff and students need is PC based, and support is easier to obtain.

No, unfortunately not. The next one is forecast to be Nov 3rd-6th, 2014. Now to try to get the funds together. I paid personally last time for the travel. Ouch. T

Still use it in production along with OES 11. I started with NetWare 2.10 via 3.11 and so on. It beats the hell out of Windows. It's happy with hundreds of connections at a time and saves money on hardware too. Mix it with Zenworks and users are happy. Thousands of users and workstations; clustering and uptime brilliant. No need to migrate. Tom

The MacOS support in ZCM 11.2 looks good. Only about 10 years after I first asked for it... Have you taken a look at membership of the TTP?

Well, I'm back from Salt Lake City in the US. I got a special deal on going to BrainShare, which is Novell's annual conference (see BrainShare 2011 ). It was remarkably well attended - about 2,000 people I think, and a number of us from the UK education crowd made it there under the auspices of the Novell Technology Transfer Partners (see Novell TTP Organization ) which exists to promote the needs of education throughout the world to the Novell, SUSE and NetIQ companies. If you're using Novell, SUSE or NetIQ products take a look at becoming a TTP member. There is more to it than just NetWare or its replacement OES running on SUSE Linux. There was a great deal on ZENWorks, which is about to get full disk encryption on Windows and proper Apple OS X client support to manage Apple workstations. There were sessions on ENGL's toolkit and also PaperCut were there. If you're a PCounter person, take a look at what you can find as a possible alternative. There is an iPrint solution for Android and iOS on the horizon, so things are looking good. GroupWise got some coverage - particularly following on from VMWare's claim via Zimbra that the product was being discontinued. OpenSUSE also had a big presence there, so there was a good mix of open source and proprietary software. Green computing it certainly was, but not my shade! Some nice security bits too such as the Sentinel product range (which is probably too expensive for most of us but worth aspiring to). I thought I'd post here, to remind people that NetWare is still supported, that Novell is still alive and kicking, and now that it's not beholden to shareholders, might actually listen to what people have to say. The new Filr Novell Filr (How do you pronounce this?) « Storage Gaga was demoed too. I look forward to it. Just a brief resume, but as this forum has been too quiet for too long, I thought I'd see what happened!

I've been deploying Windows 2003, SLES, PGP Universal Server (a Red Hat variant) and NetWare on Xen. Both in the fully and para-virtualised modes. It's not difficult to deal with, and we've been quite happy with it. There is some documentation on how to make proper fail-overs from one Xen host to another, but I've found that the SuSE documentation and instructions are easier than the CentOS and Ubuntu ones to get hold of. It's part of "Enterprise" I suppose rather than the d-i-y guides that sometimes come out of the other stables. I know we have to pay for SuSE and Red Hat, but the extra enterprise parts are in my view worth paying for, partially because of the more considered release and support cycles.

Have you got the latest SLP patches installed? With the Windows 7 move towards OpenSLP, you will need to make certain that the patches are in place, or point it at an OES Linux box.

Use Novell's QuickFinder first. That will provide you with a searchable index for your Google Mini.

It's even written in the documentation - ooops sorry, Apple doesn't do documentation..... Intel only. They could use 10.5, but not 10.6 T

Feel free to contact me about the issues with data encryption in a mixed platform environment. I don't run a standard ship (no Windows servers for example), and management gave us 8 days to implement a solution. Tom

Management was the big issue for us. Having a multi-platform solution where the same individual users' credentials can be used for multiple machines - including a hardware token that I can use to gain access to locked drives. It's really the way to doing the job properly when you can't trust people to remember the same number of different passwords that you do. It has already saved our bacon when a laptop was left at an airport.

Encryption is certainly on my radar. I've had to implement it on around 100 laptops, both PCs and Macs. A Government agency paid. Trucrypt was a no-go for them - as it wasn't on "the list" of approved products. Only PGP Enterprise fitted our cross platform needs that met with their requirements. Having a central keyserver with the ability to issue recovery tokens for when they forget them is cool! Integrates with a AD, eDir, LDAP too. T

Not really - you just apply some of the same principles as one might with iSCSI. Keep them away from the public LAN. T
